DNR clarifies what constitutes deer-baiting

The biggest change in deer regulations for the 2011 season is that outside of Deer Management Unit (DMU) 487, the six-county tuberculosis area in the northeast Lower Peninsula, baiting deer will once again be allowed in the Lower Peninsula. Energy Minister Stephen Robertson today applauded Queenslanders for embracing solar technologies for their homes and businesses, through Bligh Government solar initiatives.

Opening a 'Bright Thing' solar forum in Hervey Bay today, Mr Robertson said the Bligh Government's Solar Bonus Scheme had experienced unprecedented popularity since it was launched in 2008.

"More than 107,we supply all kinds of polished tiles,000 Queensland households are enjoying the benefits of solar energy by participating in the Solar Bonus Scheme," Mr Robertson said.

"It has become the most successful scheme of its type in Australia,The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations, offering customers householders 44 cents per kilowatt hour for any surplus electricity generated by their roof-top solar panels that is fed back into the electricity grid.

"Naturally, this level of take up has thrown up some challenges for the Queensland Government, Ergon Energy and ENERGEX to ensure the electricity network can keep up with the demand for solar connections.

Solar panels to be installed on Capital's council homes

COUNCIL chiefs are to consider rolling out a major new scheme to install solar panels in council homes across Edinburgh.
A new feasibility study will be carried out into fitting advanced solar photo voltaic panels on houses and flats, along with schools,we supply all kinds of polished tiles, offices and care homes.

The proposed scheme is part of the UK Government's Feed-In Tariffs project to make the average home more sustainable.

Under that scheme, families with a three or four-bedroom house can expect to save nearly 1000 in bills, as excess electricity generated is sold back to the grid.

The city council said it was at an early stage but that radical steps were needed to meet the target of cutting carbon emissions in half by 2020.

If an average household, a three or four-bedroom house, installed solar panels that generate electricity, they could be paid 836 a year tax-free.

Remaining electricity costs would therefore be reduced from 450 to 300, saving 150, and the total benefit would be 986 per year.

Alongside plans for council homes, local authority chiefs will consider installing solar panels on schools, offices,we supply all kinds of polished tiles, and care homes to cut bills and generate extra revenue.

Work has Sprinker on track for Jan. 2 opening

The roof is going up, the floor is stripped down to dirt and a new ice rink floor soon will be built at Sprinker Recreation Center.

Gone is the leaky, rusty roof where water dripped onto the ice, causing pits. The failing refrigeration system and rink floor have been removed.

The $6.5 million remodel of the deteriorating Sprinker Ice Arena is about one-quarter complete and expected to be finished in time to open for skaters on Jan. 2.

Signs of new life are now beginning to take shape – most visibly with a new roof. Construction of the ice rink floor is expected to start in about two weeks.

The Pierce County Council recently approved spending $400,000 of its car rental tax money on Sprinker. It is considering using the remaining $400,000 for parks maintenance over the next several years.

The Legislature this year amended the tax with Sprinker in mind so that the entire amount – not just 25 percent as had been the law – can be used for youth or amateur sport activities or facilities.

The Sprinker arena's "been around a long time, giving good service to our community," said Rep. Bruce Dammeier, R-Puyallup, who spearheaded the change. "We need to get it renovated to continue to do that. Our county needed options to renovate it."

Last year, 294,029 people used the ice arena, tennis courts and other attractions at the Spanaway facility, including 88,055 users of the ice arena for public skating, figure skating, hockey and classes.

With the added $400,000, the county will replace the roof that extends from the rink to the adjacent offices and foyer, and replace the heating and ventilation systems for that area.

The Legislature's change makes it easier for Pierce County to spend the $800,000 it had accumulated in rental car tax money. The sun shone brightly on the steps of the old Capitol Monday morning as James Scrivener, CEO of National Solar Power, revealed Gadsden County as the chosen site of the company's first solar farm.

The Melbourne-based company had narrowed down potential sites for the farm — originally including communities in Georgia and North Carolina — to Gadsden, Hardee, Osceola and Suwannee counties.

Along with the support of the region, local government and large, usable tracts of land, Scrivener said that Gadsden County's proximity to the university and college systems made it particularly appealing.

"We were very interested in the opportunity to be near a great team of higher education resources in Florida State University, Florida A&M University and Tallahassee Community College,These girls have never had a oil painting supplies in their lives!" he said. The U.S. solar industry took a hard fall this year when solar cell manufacturer Solyndra went bankrupt after the Obama administration loaned it $535 million. The company was raided by the FBI in early September, where emails were found suggesting that the White House knew that Solyndra was destined to fail, but reportedly ignored these claims in order to push green technology ahead in the company's groundbreaking ceremony in 2009.

According to The Wall Street Journal contributor Yuliya Chernova, Solyndra accepted the loans and spent the money, then couldn't sell it at the price it needed. Overproduction was also a noted problem.

"Many companies, when they're young start-up companies, first are losing money with the expectation that the costs -- fixed costs will get amortized overtime," said Chernova in a Fox News interview. The gloomy financial forecast that has San Jose considering shuttering its branch libraries and community centers next summer could also claim another casualty: a money-saving solar project at the heart of Mayor Chuck Reed's clean-energy plan.

The threatened closures could kill plans to install solar panels at no cost to the city on the roofs or parking lots at libraries and community centers.

Despite that stark scenario -- a setback to Reed's Green Vision plan -- the City Council on Tuesday will consider whether to move ahead on power purchase agreements with San Mateo-based SolarCity to install and maintain solar panels on 28 city-owned sites, including 23 branch libraries and community centers.

"One of my goals is to reduce or get half of our electricity from clean, renewable energy sources, and to do it with other people's money," Reed said.

The financing mechanism is exactly what makes the deal so appealing.

A staff memo outlining the original proposal shows that SolarCity would pay to install and maintain the solar array systems at each site. Acting classes help Parker County kids learn "the biz"

Twila Barnett returned to Weatherford in 2006 from Riverview, Fla. During her early years as a Texas resident, she operated a 24-hour day care in her Fort Worth home. Among those in her care were a few ADD children, but she didn't want them on medication while under her supervision.

"We liked them better that way," Barnett said about herself and her husband, Mark. "The day care was organized and scheduled [to meet the needs of those children]. The deeper we dug in to find out why these children got in trouble, why their grades were so low, we found out they were talented kids."

For the many children who stayed in their home during the evenings and overnight, the Barnetts became a second set of parents. And in her care, they learned to "vent their talent" which included acting because on stage, just about anything goes.

After a while the children wanted to move on to the next level, and Barnett knew she had to set a positive example.

"I educated myself," she said. "Their parents were working and didn't have time. Miss Twila and her day care, off we'd go to Dallas for auditions."

Before she knew it, Barnett had created a story of children overcoming various struggles like persecution for being biracial, the loss of a parent and dealing with learning disabilities. She called up her old friend, Travolta, and asked what he thought about it. Should she turn it into a short, educational project for the kids? To her surprise, he called her back and encouraged her to turn the script into a feature film.

Shortly after the Barnetts returned to Texas.

When former online poker pro Devin Porter walked into an interview for a tech-support position at a web-based company he took a page out of popularized con artist, turned financial fraud consultant Frank Abignale Jr.'s playbook.

"I found out during the interview that they wanted someone with knowledge of xml, html, http, JavaScript, et cetera," said Porter, who had his previous profession voided by Black Friday. "I have none of that, so I bull shitted my way through the whole thing knowing that I'd just have to learn their software quick and become valuable to the company before they figured out I was a hack job."

When questioned on one of the web-development qualifications, Porter went into a tangent relating the skill to online poker and playing 15 tables at once. When the feces flinging was over, Porter turned Abignale Jr. was offered the job.

Porter was living a comfortable, simple life in Utah with his wife and two-year-old son before the political economy of gaming brought out the cold deck for the family man.

Referring to himself as the "anti-baller," Porter was starting a family while "most young [poker players] were buying cars and clubbing." He has always wanted to be "different than everyone else," but yet humble and faithful to his origins. I have let it go."

To be frank, it seems like this plot line is just a mash up of several overplayed plotlines. Surprisingly, the series stands out this season as one of the most promising, funny thirty minutes to hit television.

Residents of Greene Mountain Lake in Stanardsville say that sometimes on Friday football nights, they can hear the voice of their neighbor and friend Zed French.

Maybe it's the wind. Maybe it's his clear, energetic, enthusiastic voice. Maybe it's the power of the microphone when he volunteers as the announcer of William Monroe football games.

With the exception of a five-year sabbatical from announcing when he was principal at rival Madison County, French has been the man behind the microphone of William Monroe High School football for almost 30 years. In that time he has not always been alone.

"A couple of years after I moved here, Ray Dingledine and I were asked to be the announcers," French says. "Ray was the announcer when I moved to Madison but then he had to quit when he became superintendent of schools."

"We're not alone up there," French says. "Other volunteers help, like the spotters. Of his many memories from announcing, French recalls one aerial attack that nearly stopped the game.

"As they come down for a landing, they see all the people running around on the field and the people in the stands and realize their mistake," French says. French was at his post when the Dragons played Broadway in the partially completed new facility on Sept. 9. This marked only one of many changes French has seen in the schools athletic program during the last three decades.

"The press box area started out as a one-story frame building at the top of the bleachers," French recalls. "There was one little door and one big open window space with no glass pane at all. It got a little difficult announcing when you had the wind and rain blowing in."

French also recalls that the original press box was on the ground level — which caused a problem when fans got too wrapped up in the game.

"They would walk up and down and sometimes stop in front of us," laughs French. "We would have to ask them to move because they were blocking the view and we couldn't announce."

French credits his dad and a childhood football announcer for getting him interested in announcing when his chance came.

"Sheffie Massie was the football announcer in Tazewell where I grew up," says French. "My dad took me and my four brothers to all the games. I thought it was so neat for Massie to be the voice of the Bulldogs, and now I am the voice of the Dragons."

"The really neat thing is that the teams have the same colors – green and white," adds French. "And the Bulldogs biggest competitor, the Richmond Tornadoes, wore blue and white, which are the colors of Greene's biggest rival the Madison Mountaineers. Different time zone but same colors."

French, who is a retired Greene County principal, has no plans to retire from announcing for the Dragons.

"I still have my two main interests – music and sports," states French. "I play hootenannies at the schools like I did when I was a principal. It is like when I was a student and saw Mr. Massey announcing, and it made such an impression on me. It shows the future generations that we are all part of one community."

Excitement fills French's voice when he talks about the new facilities at William Monroe High School.

"Unlike many counties that grew in population but not in facilities, Greene has kept up," says French. "From sports to performing arts, our schools will continue to function as a central meeting place for all. This hub will provide both students and the community with first-class facilities."

French, who considers himself just one small cog in the machinery that makes the Greene community, thanks the volunteers and supporters who have made all the renovations possible.

Former MTV leader talks at Westminster

The former CEO of MTV Networks International had a crowd of Westminster College students in stitches yesterday as he laced a lecture on his life with jokes about bringing the world "extremely intelligent programming" such as "Jersey Shore" and "Beavis and Butt-Head."

He has rubbed elbows with presidents, prime ministers and heads of state, and the top names in music.

"I never imagined that from a beach in Miami," he said, referring to his childhood.

Fuel cells headed to AT&T to augment solar power

Born in Poland, Ptak moved to New York in 1986. She earned Associate's degree in architectural drawing. For 20 years, she worked in downtown New York. New York City's changed skyline continues to inspire her. Ptak prefers mixed media and collages.

A depiction of an exaggerated Brooklyn bridge features cutout columns from blocks of paper uniquely painted and pasted onto her canvas, giving the piece a multidimensional and large look. Two people crossing it and a sailboat below it are tiny, adding scale. Both balance the painting and stress the bridge as focal point.

Tanzanians have been urged to find alternative sources of energy in order to enable the country attain fast development. Emerging from a decade-long civil war, Liberia's new government is led by Africa's first elected female head of state: the US-educated Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Her government has implemented a number of initiatives in tandem with international development agencies designed to rebuild the country's infrastructure and economy.

These new initiatives encompass the development of agriculture, mining manufacturing and general commerce aimed at utilising the resource potential of the country.

Major firms that have invested in the West African country since the new government took over include: Arcelor Mittal, which has increased its Liberian iron ore investment; and Firestone National Rubber Company, which has a rubber plantations agreement running to 2041. Meanwhile, BHP Billiton, Severstal and Chevron are also involved in Liberia and the country is seen as strategically important by both the US and China.

Equatorial is currently involved in reinstating thousands of hectares of abandoned oil palms while planting further hectares as part of a ramp-up towards production. Speaking to Proactive Investors last year, Michael Frayne likened the process to developing a mine, or proving up the reserves of a major oil and gas project. "You need to take time to set up a palm oil project properly," he told us.

In June last year the firm established a pre-nursery site at Palm Bay to received the first batch of germinated hybrid oil palm seeds (which had been ordered from Unipalm in the Democratic Republic of Congo). A total of 240,000 seeds were planted in the pre-nursery between July and October.
