Montreal's Mega Brands expects 2012 to be a strong year for a comeback after turning the page on costly recalls and lawsuits that stemmed from an ill-fated acquisition in 2005

The bustle on the premises and smiling faces of the young staff suggest a company on the cutting edge, not a spent force, though that's the impression many have in light of the financial woes that followed its $350-million (U.S.) acquisition of Rose Art Industries and its ill-fated Magnetix line of toys in 2005.

That chapter is now closed, as far as president and chief executive officer Marc Bertrand, Vic's brother, is concerned.

While revenue is not what it was five years ago, when Mega Brands had global sales of more than $500 million, the company still sold $376 million (U.S.) worth of toys, crafts and stationery internationally in 2011, though it eked out only a small profit of $8.3 million.

"We're working our way back," Marc Bertrand said.

"What we had last year delivered sales growth for us. But the holiday season wasn't what it should have been. Overall, the toy industry was down nine per cent in December," Vic Bertrand added.Buy low price china mosaic.

They anticipate stronger numbers from this year's lineup, which includes Hello Kitty construction toys for girls, eye-catching 3D puzzles with protruding heads and the debut products of its new licensing agreement with Blizzard Entertainment, based on its massively popular online role-playing game World of Warcraft.

"Gamers average 27 hours a week on their hobby, and some spend it all on one game. It's a very big industry. With an evergreen product, you can create a three-to-five year business plan with new content coming to market periodically."

While new lines extend the demographic reach, preschoolers remain its bread and-butter audience, generating about half of annual sales.

Solar Energy Ideal Option for Many Jamaicans

With the increase in oil prices and ultimately electricity bills, for many Jamaicans, solar energy can prove to be an ideal source of power for homes and businesses.

To this end, the Government has been encouraging Jamaicans to use renewable energy, such as solar energy, as a means of reducing electricity cost.

We did develop a standard offer contract in September of 2011 that was headed up by the Office of Utilities Regulations (OUR), which sets out the regulatory terms by which a person can generate solar energy and really any renewable energy source, but solar is the one we think people will desire the most,” Mr. Lindo tells JIS News.

Not only can they use the grid as a back-up, but in times when they are generating more electricity than they need, they can sell power to JPS and get some remuneration, and that again will help to defray the cost of putting the system on their roof,” he adds.

Mr. Lindo notes that the Bureau of Standards Jamaica is currently working on standards for the interconnections.

In the meantime, he says there are a number of ways in which persons can acquire solar energy equipment without having to bear all the cost at once.

“One of them is a loan through the National Housing Trust (NHT). The NHT has offered solar loans since 2006 for solar water heaters and in 2008 for photovoltaic panels. We applaud the NHT for what they are doing (but) we think there are ways they can adjust the loan to further optimise it and make it available for people, because the uptake of the loan has perhaps not been as aggressive as one would hope, but we’re working on it to make the loan even more attractive,” Mr. Lindo says.

He points out that the NHT has the lowest rates and the best terms in the marketplace and “we want more people accessing that, so that they can put some solar panels on their roof."

“We have been engaging the NHT since late last year regarding that, and we continue to do so,” Mr. Lindo says.

The NHT provides financing to contributors for installation and retrofitting of solar heating systems. The loan is available to contributors who can provide a title for a residential property or who has at least enough funds in their Contribution Account at the NHT equal to the cost of the system, plus $20,000. The loan can be obtained at an interest rate of 3 per cent over a maximum period of 5 years with a 5 per cent service charge.

The Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ) also has loans available which can assist in buying solar energy equipment. The funds that are available through the DBJ are provided by the World Bank.

“One of the flagship projects we have at the Ministry is the Energy Security and Efficiency Enhancement Project. It’s US$15 million and is devoted to improving the regulatory conditions for energy in the country and a good deal of that money was set aside for the DBJ to lend to businesses to do their energy projects,” Mr. Lindo says.

President of the Jamaica Solar Energy Association, Roger Chang, says with these institutions available to provide financing, more Jamaicans can invest in solar energy equipment for their commercial and residential use.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America studied 100 metropolitan areas for spring allergies and ranked St. Louis as the 29th worst city. It has an above-average amount of spring pollens and a high use of allergy medications. Number one on the list of worst allergy cities is Knoxville, Tenn.

The region averages 300 grains of pollen or mold per cubic meter of air daily. A count of 150 grains of pollen or mold per cubic meter of air can trigger allergy symptoms among many with allergies, according to the foundation.

Topping the tree pollen list are: Oak, juniper, ash, poplar, elm, sycamore, willow and mulberry.

Last fall, the foundation ranked St. Louis as one of the top ten cities for fall allergies. Last year the region had four air-quality alerts for dangerously high mold counts during the allergy-reporting season, making it one of the worst allergy seasons in a decade.

'Bumspiel' to raise awareness of colorectal cancer

When most people survive cancer, they just want to put the disease and its gruelling treatment behind them.

Not Surrey's Deb Imada.

That's because her cancer was in her behind. And now she's made it her mission to put colorectal cancer in the forefront of people's minds.

She's doing that by organizing the second annual Bumspiel for Colorectal Cancer, to be held at the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster on Saturday (March 31).

The event is a fundraiser for the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada. But more importantly, Imada hopes it will raise awareness about the disease and how to survive it.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in Canadian men and women combined. Of the approximately 22,000 Canadians diagnosed with colorectal cancer last year, 8,900 will die from it. Those are grim numbers considering the disease is curable 90 per cent of the time – ifOur team of consultants are skilled in project management and delivery of large scale rtls projects. it's caught early.

It's that last part that hangs most people up, says Imada. It's not easy to talk about your backside, and "people are so fearful about getting a colonoscopy."

In fact, cancer was the furthest thing from Imada's mind when she went to her doctor to get checked out for a possible recurrence of the hemorrhoids that had plagued her after her son was born four years earlier. Her family had no history of colorectal cancer, she'd never had a problem with benign polyps, she was active, and she was only 43 years old - seven years younger than the primary risk group.

But when her doctor said she felt a lump during her examination, Imada's world turned upside down.

Four months of tests, two surgeons and five days of radiation treatment later, the tumour was removed.

"The waiting is the hardest part," says Imada. "The whole time I felt like a ticking time bomb."

But her battle didn't end there. Six months of chemotherapy stretched to eight. She suffered numerous side effects, including painful numbness in her fingers and the bottoms of her feet. She says there were days she was so physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted, she couldn't get out of bed.

Regular screenings to ensure she remained clear of cancer are emotionally agonizing.

Every colonoscopy or CT scan, she hopes and prays for a clean report. She'll continue to be screened for the rest of her life. It's like a fellow patient once told her, "We're out of the woods, but we're not yet out of the forest."

Home and Garden Show takes over ice center

For one weekend, gardening and home improvement replaced hockey and ice skating at the George S. Eccles Ice Center.

A floor made of interlocking rubber mats covered the surface of the ice, and more than 90 vendors set up booths for the Cache Valley Media Group 2012 Home and Garden Show on March 23-24.

Carl Yeip, a sales representative for the Kaysville-based food storage company Daily Bread, said he thought the ice center was a good venue for the event.Wireless Indoor Positioning System have become very popular in the system.

“The biggest advantage and the whole reason we moved it from USU — USU has been good and the facility was great,” Roper said. “I don't have anything bad to say about Utah State University at all — it's just the location and the parking. “The biggest concern was how cold is it going to be,” Roper said. “Yeah, it's a little chilly, but it's not horrible. People that come in and go through the show, they enjoy it. They seem to be liking the energy that's here.”

Floyd Naegle, executive director for the ice center, said though the ice maintains a temperature of 20 F, the “sports court” covering helps keep air above it warmer.

“That floor almost acts like an insulator, so the (heat) doesn't hurt it,” Naegle said. “We turn it up about 6 or 8 degrees. It's pleasant. It's about 60 degrees, but if you get a bunch of bodies out there, it's more like 65.”

Roper said parking at the ice center is more simple than parking on campus.

“There have been no parking problems whatsoever,” he said. “When we were at the university, we were allowed only during their Spring Break, and they didn't change their parking regulations during that time period. So we had many many people who still got tickets, and (vendors) had to park a long ways away to get their stuff into the venue.”

Naegle said though the ice center had to cancel its usual skating activities, the garden show was an ideal event for the ice center to host. The ice center and Cache Valley Media Group have worked together often in the past, and the publicity generated by the garden show may help introduce new customers to the ice center, Naegle said.

“The amount of advertising they do on the radio, where every advertisement says, 'at the George S. Eccles Ice Center,' is invaluable,” Naegle said. “One of the things I've been chartered to do is get a new clientele in here … most people know the ice center is here, but many of them still have not come in and seen what a jewel of a facility this is.”

Early spring brings early allergies

Thorne Wittstruck enjoys the warmer weather, but he’s not a fan of the seasonal allergies that accompany it.

“If I look out the window and see my car covered in pollen, I will usually take more than one shower that day just to get it off of me to provide some relief, especially if I am out for a run or mowing the lawn,” he said.Bathroom Floor tiles at Great Prices from Topps Tiles.

Wittstruck, 42, said the warmer-than-usual temperatures the past few weeks have made him reach for Benadryl a little more than usual this year. The St. Clare Hospital employee also has a nasal inhaler he uses if his allergy symptoms worsen.

“I really enjoy being outside, but I also enjoy seeing the first day of winter come because I know I can begin tailoring back on my medication,” he said. “Once that first frost comes, I finally get some relief from my allergies.”

The 29-year-old said she began getting seasonal allergies three years ago. “I thought it was a cold coming on because of the sneezing and the runny nose, but I had clear drainage with it,” said Nault, a nurse at St. Clare.

When she started having the symptoms, she began taking over-the-counter medicines such as nasal spray, which worked.

“My allergies have really come on strong this year because of the warm temperatures,” she said.

Dr. Christina Hook said allergy season usually begins in April and May. She said some people confuse allergies with colds.

Hook said with allergies, people will have itchy eyes, sneezing and runny noses with clear mucous drainage. She said with

colds people will feel run down, have a slight fever and mucous with some color to it. Hook said with the flu, people will “feel like they’ve been hit by a truck” and will hurt all over their bodies.

“We may be in the peak of the flu season, but having the flu is much different than having an allergy to something,” Hook said.

She said with the flu, people will suffer from high fevers, sore throats, painful joints and headaches.

Hook said right now she is seeing people suffering from allergies. She said the peak activity is due to tree pollen such as the maples, elms and cedars.

Hook, of St. Clare Hospital and Dean Clinic-Wisconsin Dells, said she began seeing patients with allergy problems within the last two weeks.

Dr. Christine Virnig, an allergist, has been seeing patients for about a month now.

She said outdoor molds and tree pollen are triggering problems for many of her patients.

“Outdoor molds typically start to cause allergy symptoms as soon as the snow melts,” she said. “Trees usually don’t cause symptoms this early, but with the warm weather we are seeing problems earlier than in past years.”
