Doctors Finally Call Off Strike, Unconditionally

Details of the talks between the doctors and President Kikwete at the State House on Friday were not revealed. But Dr Mkopi confirmed that no conditions or deadlines are attached to their resolve to call off the strike.MAT Secretary General Dr Rodrick Kabangila said that the objective of the strike was not to endanger the lives of Tanzanians but to improve working environment for medical workers.

He maintained that the medics were not ready to work with Dr Mponda and his deputy. The Labour Court has declared the doctors strike illegal and ordered them back to work immediately.The application for the order was filed to the Commission for Mediation and Arbitration (CMA) by the Attorney General, Judge Frederick Werema, in Dar es Salaam, under a certificate of urgency.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry said on Saturday that it would monitor service delivery in hospitals following the doctors' decision to return to work. "We are informed that doctors have agreed to resume work, but we will keep a close eye on them countrywide so as to monitor their activities," The Acting Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Donnan Mmbando told the Sunday News.
