Battle over chicken coops in Arlington Heights could continue

The fight for chicken coops in Arlington Heights is not over.

Matt Scallon, who petitioned to the Village Board last week to allow him to set up a coop for three hens, said his desire to establish chicken coops in the village is not going anywhere – and neither is the coop frame he began building before the board’s denial.

He is trying to reach out to other chicken enthusiasts who are interested in establishing coops and is considering ways to appeal the board’s decision.

Scallon’s options are somewhat limited. He can either resubmit his variance request with changes that he thinks may shift the board’s opinion, or he can ask staff to look into an ordinance that would allow the chickens, said Robin Ward, assistant village attorney.

The board voted 7-2 to deny Scallon a variance that would give him permission to set up a coop in his backyard, citing issues with potential odor, disease, noise and predators.

But Scallon wishes the board would have tabled the issue until a later meeting and taken time to review the research before making a decision.

“I do think it was somewhat unfair,” he said. “What’s disappointing is that so many other communities have worked out the issues of odors and disease and everything like that, so why Arlington Heights can’t work through that is something of a mystery to me.”

Bucks and Montgomery County manufacturers are meeting Wednesday morning to talk about a key issue - after years of declines in manufacturing employment, they are facing looming shortages of highly skilled workers.

"We're not the only ones" worried about a skills gap. There are also shortages, she said, in people trained to be machinists and setup technicians.

So eager are the area's manufacturers to address the issue of a looming shortage of skilled manufacturing employees that they are forming their own grassroots group - the Bux-Mont Manufacturing Consortium. The Wednesday meeting, to be at the North Montco Technical Career Center in Lansdale, is its second.

On the agenda are discussions of how to engage trade schools in the region to build a talent pipeline and a review of existing training funding and availability through government workforce investment boards and community colleges.

The group was just beginning to galvanize last spring when the Middle Bucks Institute of Technology announced that it would close its precision machining program. Enrollment had dwindled to five students.

In the fall, the Bucks County Workforce Investment Board chose the school to host a manufacturing job fair. Nearly every manufacturer that set up a table at the event was looking for a machinist.

Some said that they would hire a machinist even without an immediate opening, just to get them on the payroll.

K'nex toolmakers earn between $18 and $30 an hour, and must work 55 hours weekly. Even the lowest paid earns more than $1,100 a week with overtime.

"What we have to do is make sure that manufacturing jobs are attractive to parents, teachers, and students," Christman said.

"Recruiting for the third shift is impossible," she said. She's looking for basic manufacturing workers, who will earn $13 an hour, more for the night shift. Last year, she hired 33 entry-level machine operators.

To date, though, Americans are not widely acquainted with SIMcards, partly because Sprint and Verizon Wireless have large customer bases that use CDMA and have never used GSM phones with SIMs, noted Andrew Borg, an analyst at Aberdeen Group.

The question of how security is incorporated into a phone isn’t expected to squelch growth of NFC payments in the U.S., but could play a role in how fast it gains popularity, Borg said.

Arno Carstens will present another artistic dimension in his first solo exhibition of oil paintings at the Lovell Gallery in Cape Town. “Basically, we’re trying to grow any vegetable that people eat,” he said. And Tuchman, who lives on campus and sees daily progress, is excited about the future. As his farm expands, he said the university will host more events open to the public such as a series of workshops and cooking classes this summer. He also would like to see the facility at local farmers markets and offer Loyola students and staff a community-supported agriculture program — a system where they pay an annual fee to the farm and get a share of its produce.

Kahn Design did not change the characteristics of the TDV6 engine, instead they focused on the exterior and interior refinements. Upon request they can offer an ECU upgrade from Cosworth upping the power of the TDV6 and 5.0 LR-V8 supercharged engine to higher output values. The company recently held its 65th Anniversary Banquet at the Rusty Nail for both current and former employees. In addition to handing out service awards, the company also distributed profit-sharing checks – continuing a Colonial tradition started in the 1950s.

Matt Metcalf, Colonial CEO, shared the company’s history:

In 1944 brothers Dr. Vic Yahner and Blaise Yahner, along with John Stehle, started a company known as the Kent Plastic Mold and Die Co. In the early days the company was a three-man operation that specialized in machining castings and bar stock items for local manufacturers.

The business operated in the basement of Dr. Yahner’s professional building located in downtown Kent on North Water Street between Star of the West Mill and Hometown Bank. If you drive by now, it will stand out as the storefront that is not quite parallel to the street, currently the home of the Franklin School of Dance.

While the machine shop operated out of the basement, the office activities were located above on the second floor, with the dental practice continuing on street level.

Going from the shop to or from the office was a quick and easy run up or down a fire escape. At least it was easy in the summer, as the first person to make the trip on winter days had to worry about the icicles that would form on the steps and sometimes block the door. A hammer was hung outside during the winter and the first to visit the office each day would have to knock some of the large icicles away just to get the door open.

On Jan. 15, 1947, the company was incorporated and a year later the name was changed to Colonial Machine Co. “My role in this project is bringing all of these ideas into one,” Gray said. “Chief Architect allows you to design a floor plan and go into different views to see what the room would look like if it was built.”

Because of Caleb’s passion for motocross, a Fox Racing theme was used in the room. But because he shares a room with his brother, Logan, Caleb made sure Strickland knew to also incorporate horses, his brother’s interest.

Since the boys’ bedroom had pre-existing water damage, which caused stains on the ceiling and mold on the windows, the room has been gutted by area businesses and a new roof put on to get it ready for the Glacier students.

The source of the water damage was that there wasn’t an overhang on the roof of the family’s trailer to siphon water away from the walls. “Everyone that’s donated time and materials, I’m so greatly appreciative,” Amber said.

Does photography record external reality or does it create its own, self-contained reality? Both, of course. So long as the light that makes the image originates from outside the photograph, there has to be some measure of external reality involved. That’s true of even the most manipulated or purely abstract picture. Conversely, once printed even the most information-packed newsphoto becomes its own reality: two dimensions doing the work of three.

All photography, then, lies on a continuum of outer and inner. So the question becomes where on that continuum does a particular photograph lie? In what direction, and how far along it, does a photographer choose to go?

Jerry Uelsmann has spent more than half a century addressing those questions — and going emphatically, if winkingly, as far along the inner-reality side as he can get. Uelsmann offers juxtapositions that are conceptually jarring yet visually seamless.
