Acting classes help Parker County kids learn "the biz"

Twila Barnett returned to Weatherford in 2006 from Riverview, Fla. During her early years as a Texas resident, she operated a 24-hour day care in her Fort Worth home. Among those in her care were a few ADD children, but she didn't want them on medication while under her supervision.

"We liked them better that way," Barnett said about herself and her husband, Mark. "The day care was organized and scheduled [to meet the needs of those children]. The deeper we dug in to find out why these children got in trouble, why their grades were so low, we found out they were talented kids."

For the many children who stayed in their home during the evenings and overnight, the Barnetts became a second set of parents. And in her care, they learned to "vent their talent" which included acting because on stage, just about anything goes.

After a while the children wanted to move on to the next level, and Barnett knew she had to set a positive example.

"I educated myself," she said. "Their parents were working and didn't have time. Miss Twila and her day care, off we'd go to Dallas for auditions."

The next thing she knew two of her sons — Bug Hall and Gemini Barnett — were cast in the 1994 film The Little Rascals and the Barnett family set off for Hollywood.we supply all kinds of polished tiles, Bug, now 26,It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line. played Alfalfa and Gemini played Weezer. And her children's talent created a fork in the road for Barnett.

"I loved working with the kids," she said. "I never thought I'd do anything different."

Barnett tried to keep her day care going while stationed in Los Angeles, but her children were achieving so much success the family moved to California, and Barnett found work coaching kids on set with various production companies.

Her next career move came when Joey Travolta hired her to work as an acting teacher at Entertainment Experience and then as a camp director for production courses for autistic children.

"That's when I really felt I found another niche," Barnett said.

When the family ended up in Florida in 1997 for Gemini to work on the ABC show Second Noah, Barnett continued working on set and found work with the Pop Shop, a performing arts studio for children. There she met more students with varying degrees of conflict in their young lives, and she started taking notes for a script.

Before she knew it, Barnett had created a story of children overcoming various struggles like persecution for being biracial, the loss of a parent and dealing with learning disabilities. She called up her old friend, Travolta, and asked what he thought about it. Should she turn it into a short, educational project for the kids? To her surprise, he called her back and encouraged her to turn the script into a feature film.

Shortly after the Barnetts returned to Texas.

The two youngest of her four children, Dakota and Gemini, attended Weatherford High School,Replacement China Porcelain tile and bulbs for Canada and Worldwide. but the family didn't go around boasting about their Hollywood ties.

"The kids are all humble,we supply all kinds of polished tiles," Barnett said. "I'm the one who brags. They would go to church every Sunday, and people would think they looked like the kid [from this or that]."

Then one day,The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations, the family hosted Gemini's high school football team for a party in their home. His friends saw photos of Gemini with Jay Leno, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steven Spielberg, Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore and other celebrities and asked how he knew all of them. The cat came out of the bag.

When the kids told their coach about Gemini's TV and movie roles, Gemini responded "I just love life," Barnett recalls of her son's reaction. "I love everything — acting as much as football."

Gemini's has also appeared in the Wedding Singer, the 2006 film Mr. Fix it, the TV series Kelly Kelly, The Magnificent Seven and Family Law. He also appeared in the film Arizona Summer along with his brother Bug and was the puppy voice in Babe.

Bug's resume includes The Munsters' Scary Little Christmas, where he played Eddie and a role as Adam in Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. He has also appeared in the TV series Providence, CSI, Strong Medicine, Charmed, Cold Case, The O.C., Justice, CSI Miami, Saving Grace, Nikita, Criminal Minds and the 2011 series 90210. He has two movies in post-production and two in pre-production.

Catching the sunlight in shady places

LAST SEPTEMBER artist Bernadette Madden was preparing for the busiest weeks of her year. As a judge for the Irish Theatre Awards, she was gearing up to see nearly 60 shows in just over a month, as Dublin’s two major theatre festivals kicked off. Madden served on the awards panel for two years running and although she occasionally misses the intensity of a full-time theatre- viewing schedule, when her tenure finished last December she was relieved to get back to her day-job. Indeed, Madden has been hard at work putting together a new solo show ever since, which opens at Gormley’s Fine Art Gallery on South Fredrick Street this week.

Although Madden’s studio time was limited during her two-year commitment to the theatre awards, it was her experiences travelling around the country that directly inspired the theme of her new exhibition: Sunlight in a Shady Place. “At the start I conceived that the exhibition would be a study of my travels,” she says. Madden always travels with a camera, and she meticulously documented her journeys. Originally, she planned “a series of images of Ireland; all the small towns and cities that I stayed in when I was on the road to see a play. I thought I would concentrate on town centres, city overviews, high buildings; something which I have done before.” But “there was one recurring image from those photographs that just kept coming back to me,” she explains, as she shows me her new paintings. “An image of light in the trees, captured from the window of a fast-moving train or car. Often I would be travelling in the early morning, and there would be this sort of quick-glimpsed image of light illuminating the darkness of the countryside; gradually the trees started to take over.” The resulting 25 pieces are a vibrant study of colour and light, rendered on the batik-worked linen canvases that have become Madden’s signature.where he teaches porcelain tiles in the Central Academy of Fine Arts.

The process of batik painting is a marvel of skill and infinite patience. Madden sketches her vision with paraffin or beeswax on raw linen before submerging the material in a base cold-water dye. Wherever the wax is used, the dye does not penetrate, so a ghostly pre-image of the finished painting begins to emerge. When the linen has dried, Madden peels or irons off the resistant wax wherever she needs it exposed. The linen is then re-dyed and un-waxed, over and over, until the composite drawing appears.Replacement rubber hose and bulbs for Canada and Worldwide. After a professional dry-clean, the finished fabric is then stretched on a wooden skeleton and framed.

For Madden’s current exhibition, which uses a palette of verdant greens laced with violets and yellows, each piece of fabric was dyed up to 10 times, and the result is a series of rich, impressionistic and densely layered light-filled canvases. Because she was originally working from photographs,If any food Piles condition is poorer than those standards, Madden had imagined the work as “fairly realistic recordings of places”; the enormous triptych that provides a focal point for the exhibition, for example,By Alex Lippa Close-up of Air purifier in Massachusetts. is Kinsale Cove, to which she had travelled to see a play called Red Lola. But the paintings are also studies of an emotional response to a landscape: the feeling of viewing a fleeting, momentary beauty, as well as the landscape itself.he believes the fire started after the lift's RUBBER SHEET blew,

The versatility of working with batik rather than merely oil on canvas is visible throughout Madden’s beautiful Dublin 2 home, a period property that she brought in the 1980s, and which she has slowly renovated over the years to include a garden studio and a bright exhibition space at the back of the house. The couches in her living room are immaculately upholstered in re-purposed hemp sacks that she designed and dyed herself. The exotically tie-dyed curtains and table-cloths in the bedrooms and dining rooms are rendered from old fabric and bed sheets. In the kitchen a tinder basket holds scrolls of scrap waxed linen from her studio, which Madden uses as kindling for the fire.

Meanwhile, in the upstairs exhibition space, where she holds an annual Christmas show, there is further evidence of Madden’s industriousness: her ability to transform the by-products of her artistic enterprises into affordable gifts. Stacks of notebooks covered in off-cuts from her batik work and original screen-printed stationary sit on tables underneath her own art-work.
