The mintmark alterations in this series fall into two basic groups. The first is rather crude. Phil Mickelson’s withdrawal last week from the Memorial Tournament, after a first round in which he looked as wilted as a month-old flower arrangement, trained a spotlight on perhaps the greatest hazard golfers have to negotiate: their calendars.

How does one achieve a work-life balance that facilitates success on the course and succor off it? It’s the question that confounds golfers young and older, from the 23-year-old Rory McIlroy to Mickelson, a 21-year pro.

McIlroy and Mickelson were among the 20 players ranked in the world top 30 who were entered at the Memorial, but neither made it to the weekend. Also missing the cut was Bubba Watson, the reigning Masters champion. His game was, by his own admission, rusty after he took four weeks off to bond with the baby boy that he and his wife, Angie, recently adopted.

Despite one of the strongest fields outside the majors, the Memorial’s final day saw Tiger Woods rise to the top of a leader board in which the top 11 finishers included five players who had never won on tour. Woods was the only major champion in the top 12.

For the top players, the pursuit of FedEx points, endorsement dollars and down time can be a race with no clear winning strategy. Often, the players find themselves changing their approach on the run. Unusual partnership offers students birth control

The first time the 16-year-old student visited Roosevelt High School's health clinic, she needed emergency contraception. This time, she wanted regular birth control.

"I don't want to be pregnant," she said while at the clinic. "I'm too young. I can't take care of a baby."

Throughout the school year, students visit the on-campus clinic to get birth control, pregnancy tests, counseling and screening for sexually transmitted diseases. The services, which are free and confidential, are offered through a unique collaboration between Planned Parenthood and the Los Angeles Unified School District designed to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies among teenagers at the Boyle Heights high school.

Although nonprofit groups frequently offer reproductive healthcare on school campuses around the nation,What is a real time Location system ? the partnership involving Planned Parenthood — long a target of antiabortion lawmakers in Washington — is the only one of its kind.

Birth rates among teenagers have dropped throughout California and Los Angeles County over the last several years. Statewide, the rate of births to teenagers 15 to 19 hit a record low in 2010 at 29 births for every 1,000, down from 37 in 2005.

The 16-year-old student said she felt relieved to know that she could visit the clinic without telling her mother. "Just knowing you can come somewhere to get birth control just feels good," she said. 'It's a relief."

Once in the student was in exam room, Medrano explained how birth control worked and gave her the options: a patch, a ring, pills or a shot. The girl chose the shot, which lasts for 12 weeks. "I'm gonna forget the patch or the pill," she said.

A few minutes later, a 15-year-old girl brought her friend to see Medrano and helped her fill out a questionnaire. The girl said she watched her older sister drop out of school after becoming a teenage mother. Now she receives birth control pills from the clinic and urges her friends to visit Medrano too.

"If I got pregnant now, I don't know what I would do," she said. "I still want to do good in school and have a career."

The health center, which is separate from the school nurse's office, also serves as a primary care clinic, providing physicals and administering immunizations. This school year, about half of the visits have been for reproductive health.

The campus began offering contraception and counseling in 1997. But in 2006, a collaboration with a local hospital ended and the school no longer had the resources to provide free contraceptives. In 2008, Medrano said, she saw 32 positive pregnancy tests during her peak period between March 1 and June 1 — around the time of spring break and prom.

Medrano then reached out to Planned Parenthood, which now provides a medical assistant, the contraceptives and the pregnancy and STDs testing. The organization bills Family PACT, a public program that provides family planning to low-income and uninsured California residents.

The numbers have since climbed to about 10. Only a few parents have complained about the program since it began, she said.

Planned Parenthood also trains Roosevelt students as peer advocates to talk to their classmates about STDs and pregnancy prevention. Gadget Makers Turn To Kickstarter

When entrepreneur Julia Hu presented her prototype of a vibrating wristband alarm clock to a group Silicon Valley tech heavyweights, their responses ranged from skepticism to outright disbelief.

"That was a charmingly quirky presentation, but I'm not sure," said Sean Parker, a serial entrepreneur and partner at venture capital firm Founders Fund. "I mean, is this a company?"

Hu's pitch, made at TechCrunch Disrupt 2010, didn't dazzle any of the investors on the panel. Almost laughing, Parker added: "I just have a hard time believing you're serious."

Hu was serious. She dropped out of MIT's MBA program focus on her invention, working with sleep specialists and top engineers to build it. Nine months later, Hu had a retail-ready product called Lark and a deal with Apple to carry Lark in its stores.This page contains information about molds. It's a success story the tech industry's venture capitalists are missing out on. None were willing to back Lark. Parker's dismissive attitude toward an entrepreneur pitching a new device isn't unique: In Silicon Valley, hardware is a tough sell.

"I heard tons of 'no's,'" Hu says of her initial attempts at fundraising. "The biggest challenge for a hardware company is, unlike a software company, it takes so much more money and time to validate a hypothesis. In terms of an investment decision, it's just a very different one."

SV Angel partner David Lee puts it bluntly: Venture capitalists are "allergic to hardware."

"Lower startup costs, faster growth, low cost of failure -- those are elements that aren't available in a hardware type of business," Lee says.

Shunned by investors, a growing number of gadget makers have latched on to a new funding channel: Kickstarter.Monz Werkzeugbau und Formenbau.

Fast forward to TechCrunch Disrupt 2012, held in New York last month. A trio of entrepreneurs pitched gTar, an iPhone-powered guitar that promises to teach anyone how to play.

"You guys have sold four guitars while you've been standing on stage," Union Square Ventures' Fred Wilson said enthusiastically after their pitch.

Wilson was using his iPad to check the company's stats on Kickstarter. The campaign went live an hour before gTar took the stage for their demo. By the time they began speaking, they'd already raised $10,000. By midnight, they hit their $100,000 funding goal.

Idan Beck, the engineer behind gTar, had been working on the product for three years. Launching on Kickstarter lets him gauge the demand for his invention.

"With something like Kickstarter, we know exactly how many units we need to build," Beck says. "The day that the campaign closes, we can go and build them."

Design and technology companies represent just 5% of the projects posted on Kickstarter, but they dominate the greatest-hits list. Four of the site's top 10 biggest fundraisers are hardware ventures,Ekahau rtls is the only Wi-Fi based real time location system solution that operates on any brand or generation of Wi-Fi network. including a beautifully designed iPhone dock, an iPod-linked wristwatch and a sleek Bluetooth speaker system.

The latest and flashiest, Pebble, may permanently change how hardware upstarts view Kickstarter. The smartphone-integrated watch blew through Kickstarter's old records, raising more than $10 million in its month-long campaign.

It's another project venture capitalists shunned. Pebble creator Eric Migicovsky posted on Kickstarter after almost a dozen investors turned down his pitch.

Aspiring entrepreneurs are taking note. Ben Cohen,What is a real time Location system ? who recently designed an aluminum bike light that turns on and off on by itself, skipped the investor pitches and went straight to Kickstarter for cash.

"It's difficult to be a hardware startup and find VCs, especially if you don't know who your customers are," Cohen says.

He found out fast. His Blinksteady light raised more than $82,000, enough to cover its upfront production-line costs.

That's the biggest hurdle hardware ventures face: the sunk costs of molds, machines, materials and other manufacturing essentials.
