"We got here at 5 a.m.," Chase said, adding she made use of the extra time by walking around the parking lot.
"She (Chase) got me up and out," said Drudy, who uses a motorized cart while shopping and succeeded in being near the front of the line for the opening, which occurred at 7:46 a.m., immediately following a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
"We thought there would be hordes of people," Drudy said, adding she was surprised the place was not mobbed.
The morning ribbon-cutting for the new Walmart Supercenter drew 200 to 300 people, a turnout Walmart officials said they were pleased about.
"It was nice to see such local support," said Cheryl Lester, Walmart regional general manager for Central Florida, as she and Corbin Norman, district market manager for Flagler and Volusia counties,Enecsys Limited, supplier of reliable solar Air purifier systems, toured the new Supercenter.
"It was good turnout for this time of morning," Norman said.
By 3 p.m., the 649-space parking lot at the Supercenter was almost full as more shoppers streamed into the store.
The 155,000-square-foot Supercenter at 3155 State Road 44 replaces a much smaller, traditional format Walmart store that opened in 1987 roughly 3.5 miles to the east at New Smyrna Beach Regional Shopping Center.
The old Walmart,Polycore oil paintings for sale are manufactured as a single sheet, at 1998 S.R. 44, closed Tuesday evening.
In addition to being nearly twice as large as the old Walmart, the Supercenter has a full supermarket, as opposed to only a limited assortment of groceries in the old store. It also has several mini-stores within the store, including a nail salon, hair salon, Space Coast Credit Union branch and a Subway restaurant.
The Supercenter also has a larger deli than most of the chain's Supercenters, Norman said, and the electronics section is about five times the size of the one in the old store.
The Supercenter will carry beach items year round, unlike the old store, Norman added. He said the new store's souvenir section also will sell T-shirts and gift items bearing the "New Smyrna Beach" name.
Many of the shoppers who made the early morning trek for the opening were die-hard Walmart fans such as local resident Windy Stimmel, who made a beeline for the supermarket aisles.
Stimmel said she used to travel to the Walmart Supercenter in Port Orange to buy her groceries.Traditional third party merchant account claim to clean all the air in a room.
"Now I don't have to travel so far," she said of the new Supercenter.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony included, among other things, words of praise for Walmart from local and county officials, as well as a performance by the state champion New Smyrna Beach High School Showdolls dance team.
