Earthquakes rattle Perkins area

North central Oklahoma has been rattled by nearly 30 earthquakes over the past several days.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first large quake occurred at approximately 2:12 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6. The quake, rated at 4.7 on the Richter scale, was centered six miles southeast of Sparks, Okla. in Lincoln County. It was recorded at a depth of four kilometers.

The USGS reports this quake was felt by more than 60,000 people reporting from 14 states.

The latest strong quake, rated at 4.7 R, also centered five miles northwest of Prague, struck at 8:46 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7. This quake was measured at a depth of nine kilometers.

Most severe damage reports occurred in Lincoln and Pottawatomie counties.

Lincoln County Emergency Management Director Joey Wakefield reported 56 homes in the county were damaged, including collapsed chimneys and brick walls, buckles in floor tiles, cracks in drywall, and homes moved from block foundations.

Wakefield said three minor injuries have been reported.

In addition to damage to structures, the weekend quakes buckled a portion of State Highway 62 near Prague.

One of four turrets at St. Gregory’s University’s historic Benedictine Hall in Shawnee, Okla. collapsed, due to the quakes. The building’s remaining three turrets were significantly damaged.

Some quake damage has also been reported in the Perkins area.

North of Perkins on Mehan Road, Stan Moffat reported a large tree in his yard had split and fallen down behind his home after Saturday’s big quake. Moffat said the tree poked two small holes into the roof of the home.

The USGS reports it is not unusual to experience numerous aftershocks following 4.7 to 5.6 magnitude earthquakes, but the aftershocks will likely decrease in frequency.
