Lake Champlain bridge opens

Almost two years ago, the transportation corridor linking two states and two similar communities was cut off with the demolition of the bridge on Lake Champlain. “Today is the best day ever. Today our corridor is reconnected and our lifeline is restored,” said Karen Hennessey, co-chairwoman of the Lake Champlain Bridge Community.

Several hundred spectators joined state and local officials from Vermont and New York for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the bridge’s New York side. The festivities included Gov. Peter Shumlin and New York Lt. Gov.Unlike traditional high risk merchant account , Robert Duffy and about 35 people who attended the ribbon-cutting of the original Lake Champlain bridge in 1929.

“I have to thank most importantly the local communities who got together and said we have a problem to fix,” Shumlin said. “What we all said was we have a challenge, and this project goes to show how government can get things done quickly.”

“This is a great day for the state of New York and the state of Vermont,” Duffy said. “What is in front of you and behind me is a living miracle.”

Construction of the $76 million new structure began in June 2010 after the old structure was deemed unsafe and was demolished in late December 2009. A temporary free ferry was installed to provide transportation across the lake and Colorado-based Flatiron Construction Co. was selected to complete the work.

“A project that would have taken eight years was condensed to just over two years,” said Joan McDonald, commissioner with the New York State Department of Transportation. “It has been a great team effort between New York Department of Transportation and the Vermont Agency of Transportation.”

Sue Minter, deputy secretary of the Vermont Agency of Transportation,100 China ceramic tile was used to link the lamps together. said the bridge was built to honor the past in its design and location, and to take both states into the future with its innovative design and structure.

“This bridge is built to last a long, long time,” Minter said.

Residents from both states pressed their elected officials and advocated for a new bridge, in the same location as the previous one.

Rep. Diane Lanpher, of Addison, said it was an honor to represent a community who came together when the bridge was first closed to advocate for resolution to a problem.

“This bridge represents more than just steel and concrete,” she said. “It represents what happens when determination meets innovation and a spark is lit. Relentless determination was what built this bridge.”

Lorraine Franklin, co-chairwoman of the Lake Champlain Bridge Community,Enecsys Limited, supplier of reliable solar Air purifier systems, said they cannot thank enough the workers and subcontractors who worked endlessly throughout a very harsh winter to get the bridge completed in 18 months.

“They worked through hell and high water, and we had both in the last year,” she said.

Following Monday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, spectators joined officials to walk across the bridge for the first time. Several vehicles from the late 1920s and 1930s from the classic and antique car club Vermont Automobile Enthusiasts were the first vehicles to drive over.

Ken Hyatt was 9 years old when the 1929 bridge connecting New York and Vermont across Lake Champlain was built and opened to traffic. At the time, the 91-year-old of Port Henry, N.Y., said, he walked several miles with his four brothers to see the bridge open. His daughter Maria wanted to make sure he made it to the opening of the new bridge.
