Concerns about air quality in the workplace have until now tended to focus on little more than complaints about dripping air conditioning units or funny smells coming from the communal fridge in the kitchen.
But now a new campaign is seeking to highlight the financial and health implications of poor indoor air quality, which can often be more harmful than outdoor pollution, according to experts.
The initiative, launched by the Campaign for Clean Air in London yesterday,If any food cube puzzle condition is poorer than those standards, argues that better indoor air quality (IAQ) can help businesses reduce energy costs and carbon emissions, while also improving the health and productivity of employees.
Simon Birkett, founder of the Campaign for Clean Air in London, said the best filtration systems can help businesses protect employees from 90 per cent of air pollutants for up to 90 per cent of the time.
Indoor air can become polluted by particulates that seep in from outside or from internal sources such as air condintioners, radiators, cigarette smoke and even scented candles.
Research has found combustion products and bio aerosols cost Europe €82bn a year. The UK has the highest rate of illnesses caused by water systems, dampness and mould, ventilation and conditioning systems and building materials in the EU.
However, research in the United States has shown that better ventilation could reduce sick leave rates by 35 per cent in businesses,Whilst oil paintings for sale are not deadly, leading to savings of about $400 per employee.
To that end, the Campaign for Clean Air in London, which is backed by filtration manufacturer Camil Farr, is calling on businesses to ensure their buildings use ventilation systems with regularly maintained air filters that comply with European guideline EN 13779.
Birkett also told BusinessGreen that he is planning to urge the European Commission to make the EN 13779 standard a requirement.
While a filter itself does not consume any energy, it does create a resistance to the air flow in ventilation systems, which could consume one-third of total energy used by buildings.
