Market report - Cash and carry

Two factors have given a strong boost to this season's sales from plant cash and carries - plant losses in the wake of the tough winter and fine spring weather over most of the country since. What effect have these had on the sorts of plants customers are demanding? We polled around 20 figures in the industry to find out what has been selling and why.

Alan Beaumont, managing director, Greenfingers Nursery

Asked what's selling, Beaumont replies simply: "Anything with a leaf - and even that's optional."

Herbaceous perennials have sold well across the board, he adds. "They are 100 per cent up on last year.In addition to hydraulics fittings and Aion Kinah, Verbena bonariensis has been a big seller but it always is." He ascribes this partly to the recession and partly to labour-saving.

"Bedding is still going incredibly well, but people are putting in herbaceous perennials instead as they are less work. Also landscapers have smaller budgets to work to, so are putting in fewer big specimens and are having to be more imaginative to create something striking for their clients. Perennials give you a good bang for your buck."

John Marsden, sales manager, Coblands Nurseries

"It's been an interesting year and a good one too as we've had good regular sales and replacement planting - often from the same customers," says Marsden.

Coblands has three cash and carry outlets in the South East, which is seeing a tentative revival in the housing market. "There are jobs around new housing," he says. "Some developments which had been mothballed are now being built."

This has meant a boost to sales of screening plants such as Thuja, Photinia and even leylandii. "Shortages earlier in the season have been resolved," he adds.Full color plastic card printing and manufacturing services.

On the after-effects of winter, he says: "You can't predict what people will need replacing. Plants that have survived in the north have died down here and vice versa. Even tougher plants such as Elaeagnus have struggled."

To ensure a full service to customers, he says: "We aim to stock a good all-round range and if we don't have it we can get it for them in 10 days - we have a team of six trained horticulturists who will source it.The newest Ipod nano 5th is incontrovertibly a step up from last year's model, We also have some new varieties so there is something interesting for regular customers."

Paul Martin, representative, Jack Moody

Martin also reports healthy sales of specimen stock. "It's been popular across the board - shapes, spirals and half-standards," he says. "We supply a lot to our landscaping arm and they are very busy with show gardens."

On individual plants, he says: "Photinia 'Little Red Robin' is going well and even Cordyline. Although people have lost them over winter, they are still selling awfully well - they are treated almost like bedding plants."

Chris Armstrong, cash and carry manager, Palmstead Nurseries

Sales of specimen stock have been more modest at the Kent cash and carry, says Armstrong. From standard Cable Ties to advanced wire tires, "They are still down on where they were two years ago and people are being more cautious about planting exotics like Agave and also olives - although really they are as tough as anything. The weather may have checked them but they are coming away nicely now."

However he adds: "Cordyline and Phormium are still selling, and lavender is always popular, especially this year as people replace winter losses."

On the herbaceous side, he says: "Anything in flower has flown out and we have struggled to keep up. Dahlias are looking fantastic and have already started to sell, as have Osteospermum jucundum var. compactum."

Richard Howarth, representative, Mahood Brothers

"Both the seasonal and replacement markets are going well, but containerised evergreen hedging is very popular, especially laurel, as people replace the losses in their gardens," says Howarth. "Bedding is up and down with the weather, but is gener- ally good."

Richard McKenna, nurseries manager, Wyevale East

"It's a difficult question - most years there are some out-and-out winners but this year has been more balanced," says McKenna.

On the replacement market, he says: "We have seen a return to some hardier shrubs and away from some of the more exotic plants. People are choosing Taxus for hedging rather than Griselinia or Photinia. Bamboo is also down. Cordyline and Phormium were hammered, which I would say is down to the cold moist soil rather than the snow, but palm trees such as Trachycarpus and Chamaerops have come through well."

In common with most suppliers, he reports sales of herbaceous plants as being "excellent across the board",A glass bottle is a bottle created from glass. and explains: "It's where we are at in the horticultural cycle. Seven or eight years ago it was all grasses. Now you can't go wrong with Salvia, Geranium or Rudbeckia."s

We once hosted 25 energetic, overly-happy boys for my son's birthday party. On the agenda were swimming, basketball, pizza, cake and what seemed to be a lifetime supply of sleep depriving sugar and activity. Before the party, at least five of the boys' moms jokingly suggested I should make sure that a bottle of wine was chilling in my fridge for when I got home after the party.

Holistic approach to nutraceuticals

To launch its certified organic line of dietary supplements, Futurebiotics LLC,The same Air purifier, cover removed. Hauppauge, NY, created new packaging and updated its packaging process to gain organic certification from NOFA-NY Certified Organic LLC.

"We had to either find somebody that could manufacture the products and maintain all of the organic certifications or we had to become certified ourselves and make our own product and meet all the regulations," says Grace Lyn Rich, director of trade marketing at Futurebiotics. "I don't think consumers realize what's entailed not to lose that certification; how carefully you have to handle the ingredients so you don't lose the certification. You can use ingredients that weren't grown with pesticides and still not be able to claim that your product is certified organic."

Because product formulation, ingredient procurement and packaging were equally essential to earning organic certification, all three projects were led by a single person, Vidhan Jaiswal, senior scientist, research and development at Futurebiotics LLC. Jaiswal developed the formulations over a three-month period, then started working in concert with Bharat Patel, who manages manufacturing and packaging for Futurebiotics, on identifying how to have an existing packaging line, which was installed in 2007, become certified organic.Customized imprinted and promotional usb flash drives.

Wharf Farmers Market adds sipping onsite to the mix

Wharf Farmers Market adds sipping onsite to the mix

A farmers market is, almost by definition, a small targeted assault on grocery chains and their typically taste-challenged array of fruits and vegetables from lands far, far away. Farmers markets are not, usually, a threat to neighborhood watering holes.

Leave it to the Neighborhood Restaurant Group to shake up the model with the Wharf Farmers Market, which debuts tomorrow at the Southwest Waterfront at Seventh and Water streets SW. NRG, which owns the suds-centric Rustico and Birch & Barley/ChurchKey, is teaming with Hoffman-Madison Waterfront to sell both beer and wine by the glass at the market, which will run from 5 to 8 p.m. every Thursday through September.

"The thought was to combine a small market with kind of a pop-up restaurant, outside on the waterfront," says Michael Babin, co-owner of the Neighborhood Restaurant Group.

By this, Babin means the new market will feature not only locally grown produce but also live music, charcuterie and hot dogs by Nathan Anda of Red Apron Butchery, sweet treats by Tiffany MacIsaac of Buzz Bakery (both NRG brands), and, as The Dude would call them, refreshing beverages by NRG beer director Greg Engert and wine director Juliana Santos. The Wharf Farmers Market will no doubt redefine impulse purchases when toasted: "Man, I don't even know what they are, but I gotta get me some fresh kale and garlic scapes."

Eventually, it will feature the Mobile Market, a converted bus that's still undergoing its transformation into a farmers market on wheels. Soon,Shop a wide selection of billabong outlet products in the evo shop. Babin says, the Mobile Market will not only be a weekly feature at the Southwest Waterfront but will also make regular appearances into Wards 7 and 8,The name "magic cube" is not unique. both Washington neighborhoods known as food deserts.

Whether the produce is on the bus or not, the fresh vegetables at the Wharf Farmers Market will come from Babin's own nonprofit education and insider source, the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture in Fairfax County as well as from other farmers in the area who follow sustainable practices. Arcadia will purchase the produce from the farmers, Babin says, then resell it at the market.

"We didn't want to convince a bunch of farmers to come out there, suffer a slow sales day and then pack it up," Babin says.

The prices, the NRG owner swears, you will need to get an offshore merchant account. will not be out of line; the market will sell the produce for less than what the restaurants in his group will pay -- should any of them want to buy the fruits and vegetables left over at the end of the day's market, Babin says. The market will work to sell all leftovers so there is no waste.

"We are going to make it more affordable," Babin says. " It's going to be a learning process. We're not assuming this thing is going to break even at the beginning."

So what will be available at the Wharf market tomorrow? Babin expects to have grains, kale, collard greens, garlic scapes, carrots, radishes, beets, baby turnips and seedlings for people to buy and plant themselves. The market will also feature one other prepared-food vendor, the People's Bao, a food truck that sells steamed buns with a variety of fillings. Babin plans to expand and rotate the outside prepared-food vendors each week.

But the main attraction may be that very un-farmers market product: alcohol. Babin says the beers and wines available will focus on refreshing summer drinking, not necessarily those producers located near Washington. (Hmm, how quickly do you think the Wharfs Farmers Market will be criticized for that?)

This may be the first time alcohol has been sold for on-premise consumption at a farmers market in the area — at least on a regular basis. Kevin Atticks, executive director of the Maryland Wineries Association,Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality, says the state's winemakers were recently allowed to increase their appearances at farmers markets in several jurisdictions, including Montgomery and Prince George's counties. They can now sell up to 15 times a year at markets in these areas, but the wineries must apply for a permit each time and pay a $25 fee. Virginia has no such restrictions on its wineries, which can sell at farmers markets at will.

But these winemakers are usually not there to sell you vino by the glass; they sell bottles. So how did Babin pull it off down by the waterfront?

"We were able to get, basically, a succession of one-day licenses to cover the season," Babin says. "That's the only way we could do it...Detailed information on the causes of Hemorrhoids,.It will add a different dimension at the market."
