In some ways, the process for manufacturing the hardwood adhesive and sealant is simple.

The materials are first mixed in 1,000-gallon vessels and then transferred to 375-gallon mixing tubs where pigment and other ingredients are added. The adhesive is then placed in a press that squeezes the material into 5-gallon pails, which are sold to customers.

"It's not simply blending," he said. "The actual process is more complicated in that the mixing and blending of the materials relies on chemical interactions."

"We ship locally, nationally and some of our product lines, we export," Bowman said.

To many hockey fans, when discussing their team, the term "rebuild" is almost a dirty word. It usually means losing a lot of games in the short term which is tough to take for any sport fan.

Anyone who has watched the Montreal Canadiens play this season could be forgiven for thinking that a full-scale rebuild was in order. The truth is, though, that teams who actually need a good old-fashioned rebuild are generally in much worse shape than the Canadiens' organization today. Think the Ottawa Senators about two years back. Little depth at the NHL level and a prospect system needing a major revamping. But if we assume it will take 92 points to make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference (and the cut-off may in fact be even higher than this), the Habs will need a 29-16-1 record in their remaining games (or a similar 59 point permutation). Possible, certainly, but given their play thus far, it would seem to be highly unrealistic.

What the Habs need, then, other than a new management team and a better collective work ethic, isn't a rebuild but a bit of a re-tooling. It seems that perhaps the leadership group in place has gotten too comfortable and complacent, so a shake-up is in order. This isn't a rebuild that will require 3-5 years to return the team to respectability, but a decided purging of some players who aren't pulling their weight while ushering in a new generation of younger players as the team's primary core.

The first step in the re-tooling will be to determine who is in charge of making the important decisions. Near-death experience emboldens physician

Dr. Bartolome Kairuz says his lucky day was Sept. 22. That's the day he nearly died from internal bleeding from a ruptured artery.

The 80-year-old physician, an avid fitness buff, was exercising in a favorite gym.

"I lifted 40 pounds with my left arm and I felt this unimaginable pain in my back," he said. He collapsed and blacked out.

A friend saw it happen.

"He was one of my patients," Kairuz said. "He knew to call 911."

Emergency room doctors at St. Anthony's Medical Center diagnosed what happened and got him in surgery.

"If they hadn't worked so quickly, I wouldn't be here now."

When Kairuz awakened, he learned that he was a rare survivor of an aneurysm that had ruptured near his aorta just below his abdomen.

"I was lucky to be alive," he said.

An aneurysm is a bulge in a blood vessel wall weakened most often by vascular disease. The internal bleeding from a rupture of a bulge is often fatal.

Kairuz also had two other aneurysms that hadn't burst.

"These were massive aneurysms," said Dr. Brian Peterson, the vascular surgeon who worked on Kairuz. The operation took four hours and about 18 units of blood and blood products.

The condition is deadly because it happens fast and often without symptoms, Peterson said. Symptoms such as backaches or stomach ache often are disregarded, he said.

This first line of the tramway consists of 13 stations and 12 trains running between two densely populated eastern neighbourhoods, the districts of Bab Ezzouar and Bordj el Kiffan. The tramway is expected to transport between 10,000 and 15,000 people per day at a price of AD20 (0.20) per ticket.

When construction is complete, the tramway system will have 38 stations and cover 23 km in total, running between the country’s second-largest city, Oran, on the west coast and Constantine in the east.

In a subsequent call to The Record on Monday afternoon, Ewen said building inspectors came to inspect the modulars in the district on Tuesday, Sept. 6, the opening day of classes, and confirmed that the fire alarm systems in the modulars were fully operational. After that inspection was completed, the district received temporary occupancy permits on Sept. 6.

Ewen said he is aware of one modular in Queensborough that did not have its sewage line connected up, but that meant students had to go inside the school to use the bathroom. Ewen said the sprinkler systems inside that modular were not affected.

In addition, Ewen said there were "technical issues" with the modulars, but it was all about "paperwork that wasn't filed."

"We would never put student safety in jeopardy," said Ewen. "We had always had our sign-offs in place."

Ewen was also told by district staff that the district did have a portable at Connaught Heights that did not have a sprinkler system. But, Ewen added, that's not unusual because portables, unlike modulars, do not traditionally have plumbing systems in place.
