But for us in the short history of seventeen years in the life of Cornerstone Baptist Church it is the second dedication of a building to the work and glory of God. When we lost our building last June 15th due to a lightning strike that set the building on fire, we had no idea what God had planned for us. But look about you and will see how the work of many people has resulted in this reconstruction that we dedicate to the Kingdom of God today.

The scripture passage that we read together took place at the dedication of the first Temple in Jerusalem. In time it would be destroyed and rebuilt three times. King David had purchased the property for the Temple on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem. But he was not allowed to build it because he was known as a “man of war.” But God promised him that his son, King Solomon, would be the builder. You can imagine the excitement that went through the great throng when they saw the Ark being carried by the priests through the streets of Jerusalem to its permanent place in the Holy of Holies in the Temple. To this end, the Government has been encouraging Jamaicans to use renewable energy, such as solar energy, as a means of reducing electricity cost.

Not only can they use the grid as a back-up, but in times when they are generating more electricity than they need, they can sell power to JPS and get some remuneration, and that again will help to defray the cost of putting the system on their roof,” he adds.

In the meantime, he says there are a number of ways in which persons can acquire solar energy equipment without having to bear all the cost at once.

“One of them is a loan through the National Housing Trust (NHT). The NHT has offered solar loans since 2006 for solar water heaters and in 2008 for photovoltaic panels. We applaud the NHT for what they are doing (but) we think there are ways they can adjust the loan to further optimise it and make it available for people, because the uptake of the loan has perhaps not been as aggressive as one would hope, but we’re working on it to make the loan even more attractive,” Mr. Lindo says.

He points out that the NHT has the lowest rates and the best terms in the marketplace and “we want more people accessing that, so that they can put some solar panels on their roof."

“We have been engaging the NHT since late last year regarding that, and we continue to do so,” Mr. Lindo says.

The NHT provides financing to contributors for installation and retrofitting of solar heating systems. The loan is available to contributors who can provide a title for a residential property or who has at least enough funds in their Contribution Account at the NHT equal to the cost of the system, plus $20,000. The loan can be obtained at an interest rate of 3 per cent over a maximum period of 5 years with a 5 per cent service charge.

The Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ) also has loans available which can assist in buying solar energy equipment. The funds that are available through the DBJ are provided by the World Bank.

“One of the flagship projects we have at the Ministry is the Energy Security and Efficiency Enhancement Project. It’s US$15 million and is devoted to improving the regulatory conditions for energy in the country and a good deal of that money was set aside for the DBJ to lend to businesses to do their energy projects,” Mr. Lindo says.

President of the Jamaica Solar Energy Association, Roger Chang, says with these institutions available to provide financing, more Jamaicans can invest in solar energy equipment for their commercial and residential use.

The 98-acre Loyola University Retreat & Ecology Campus serves as a base of operations for a host of university summer courses — this year, courses such as fieldwork in ethnobotany and ethnoecology, wetland ecology and archaeology field school will be offered — as well as a retreat center for various groups and organizations. Many of the retreat traditions are carried over from the center’s previous owner.

Loyola has significantly upgraded the facility, modernizing many of the dorm rooms where students stay and also installing state-of-the-art classrooms in areas that were once storage.

“[Students] can study ecology in the classroom, then go right out and do it,” said Alex Tuchman, farm operations assistant. Tuchman actually is the assistant to no one, since the farm director left for the Peace Corp a year ago and Tuchman, then a second-year intern, was hired on full time for the job.

Tuchman is committed to making the campus a source of local produce. Since Loyola took over, Tuchman and his volunteers have turned a portion of the front lawn into the farm.

“Basically, we’re trying to grow any vegetable that people eat,” he said. “We want to be self-sustaining and self-sufficient,” he said. “The farm is becoming pretty integrated with the food service.”

While one group of visitors to campus is students who can take advantage of opportunities like the farm and the restoration of the property’s natural wetland, another group is comprised of organizations looking to have fun. Most of the visitors to the campus during the school year actually are not from Loyola.

“[We] get sports teams and groups that are interested in team building,” said Tuchman. For this, Loyola has constructed a cornucopia of summer camp and playground-like activities.

A zipline stretches several hundred yards and takes a rider’s breath away when they’re taken from 35 mph to a full stop thanks to hydraulics at the end of the ride.

Tuchman said the average size of a retreat group is about 50 people. He said all the work the university has done to the facility is paying off.

“I think people have been having really awesome experiences when they’ve been coming here,” he said. Weekends at the retreat are booked until November.

And Tuchman, who lives on campus and sees daily progress, is excited about the future. As his farm expands, he said the university will host more events open to the public such as a series of workshops and cooking classes this summer. He also would like to see the facility at local farmers markets and offer Loyola students and staff a community-supported agriculture program — a system where they pay an annual fee to the farm and get a share of its produce.

Jerry Uelsmann develops dreams in the darkroom

Does photography record external reality or does it create its own, self-contained reality? Both, of course. So long as the light that makes the image originates from outside the photograph, there has to be some measure of external reality involved. That’s true of even the most manipulated or purely abstract picture. Conversely, once printed even the most information-packed newsphoto becomes its own reality: two dimensions doing the work of three.

All photography, then, lies on a continuum of outer and inner. So the question becomes where on that continuum does a particular photograph lie? In what direction, and how far along it, does a photographer choose to go?

Jerry Uelsmann has spent more than half a century addressing those questions — and going emphatically, if winkingly, as far along the inner-reality side as he can get. A very extensive sampling of his answers can be found in“The Mind’s Eye: 50 Years of Photography by Jerry Uelsmann.Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality,” It runs at the Peabody Essex Museum through May 13.

Part comedian, part epistemologist, Uelsmann has been called the father of Photoshop — except that none of his image manipulation is done on a computer. Taking multiple negatives, he will go into the darkroom and use his enlarger to come up with a traditional-looking black and white gelatin silver print - except that there’s nothing traditional about the subject matter.

Uelsmann practices what he calls“post-visualization.” He doesn’t take a picture hoping it will duplicate what he has seen through a viewfinder. That would be“previsualization,” to use the term Ansel Adams made famous. Instead, he takes his pictures and considers how they might be combined, after the fact, to become his ultimate image. What Yosemite was for Adams, or the street for Garry Winogrand, the darkroom is for Uelsmann: his artistic home, the stage where he best practices his artistry.“As far as I’m concerned,” Uelsmann has said,“the darkroom is truly capable of being a visual research laboratory, a place of discovery, observation, and meditation.”

“Untitled’’ is the most common title in “The Mind’s Eye,’’ which is fitting. How do you give a title to something that doesn’t exist other than on a sheet of photographic paper? As Uelsmann has nicely put it, “I think of many of my photographs as being obviously symbolic but not symbolically obvious.’’

Uelsmann offers juxtapositions that are conceptually jarring yet visually seamless. Findings could change way MS is diagnosed, treated

Multiple sclerosis may begin in the outer layer of the brain and work its way into the deep interior, according to a new study that upends long-held beliefs about the nervous system disease.

The new findings, which could spur changes in the way MS is diagnosed and treated, appear to solidify a theory that has emerged in recent years. This new premise suggests that gray matter, the outer covering of the brain called the cortex, and the fluid that surrounds and cushions it, is where MS originates, not in the bulky white matter that composes most of the brain's core.

It's an "outside-in" process in other words, said study co-author Dr. Claudia Lucchinetti, a professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

"We already recognized before this study that the cortex — the superficial layer where cells control memory, attention, and other key pathways in the nervous system — was involved in MS. But most of what we knew came from autopsy studies, from patients who had longstanding disease, 30 to 50 years," said Lucchinetti, whose research was published in the Dec. 8 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

The new findings show the cortex is involved early on and may even be the initial target of the disease, she added.

Lucchinetti and her colleagues analyzed brain tissue of early MS patients obtained through biopsies. The tissue was primarily white matter,The EZ Breathe home Ventilation system is maintenance free, but about one-fourth of the biopsies (138 of 563 patient screenings) also included tiny fragments of cortex. The scientists used that tissue as the focus of their study.

The cortical tissues were viewed on a microscopic level. "The early lesions were highly inflammatory," Lucchinetti said.

The authors noted that inflammation also was present in the meninges, the protective membranes that cover the surface of the brain and spinal cord, and was strongly associated with inflammation in the cortex tissue.

About 400,000 Americans have MS, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Should patients get excited?
