Wanted, desperately: Skilled workers

The economic recovery has been driven by a manufacturing revival the past two years.

But the strength of that revival could be threatened by the challenges facing a small and beleaguered sector of manufacturing that evokes images of a quainter, more labor-intensive era: the tool and die industry.

These skilled manufacturers are vital. They produce tools, dies and molds that other makers use to shape products -- from car fenders and dashboards to shampoo bottles and cellphones.

Yet tool and die makers shrank far more dramatically than other manufacturers in the downturn, and now they're struggling to find skilled workers. As a result, they may not have a large enough workforce to support the return of significantly more manufacturing to the U.S., a trend known as reshoring, according to a Congressional Research Service report last month.

"It's unquestionably a problem" and could slow reshoring, says Harry Moser, founder of the Reshoring Initiative.

The past few years, companies such as General Electric, Caterpillar and Ford Motor have brought some production back to the U.S. They cite rising wages in China, overseas shipping costs and the need to hasten deliveries to U.S. customers.

That, along with soaring auto sales and the improving economy, has lifted tool and die makers. Last year, the number of workers in the sector jumped 7% to 98,000, while total payrolls for all manufacturers rose 2% to 11.8 million,External Hemroids are those that occur below the dentate line. according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Eighty percent of the USA's 5,800 tool and die firms -- small firms with an average 30 employees -- are seeking one to five workers, estimates Dave Tilstone, head of the National Tool & Machining Association.

Most basic parts are now made in computerized machines. But workers must design and piece together the parts to form dies and molds, often manually, relying on an unusual level of judgment and precision.

The industry's heavy reliance on labor led to its decline. Labor makes up 26% of costs vs. 18% for manufacturers overall, according to Tilstone and research group MAPI. They were dyeing eggs in the Alvarez household this Easter.

They just were not using the eggs the family normally eats.

"Well ... we dyed some store-bought ones," 12-year-old Kyle explains.

That is because the egg of choice for the Alvarez family has a brown shell, sometimes one with dark speckles — the kind of egg laid by one of five hens in the family's backyard chicken coop.

Kyle, his sisters and his parents are not alone.

The backyard chicken movement is turning suburban homeowners into part-time subsistence farmers nationwide. And the trend has plenty of practitioners in Berkshire County.

"Chickens are our biggest subject as far as interlibrary loans are concerned," said Pat McLeod, director of the David and Joyce Milne Public Library. "We've bought maybe 10 books in the last six months. It's that and goats."

At Pittsfield's Hancock Shaker Village, they have a four-hour workshop scheduled for Saturday, June 2.

"This is our second year of offering a backyard poultry workshop," HSV Marketing Director Laura Wolf said. "Prior to that, we had offered a poultry session as one of our 'Return and Learn' presentations on Saturday afternoons, and attendance for that particular topic was so high that we decided to convert that into a more thorough, hands-on workshop in which participants come away with more information, experience and some supplies."

Kyle's mom, Monica, said the Mount Greylock High Regional student was responsible for sparking the family's interest in residential livestock.

"I was at a friend's house, and they had chickens, and I thought it was pretty cool," Kyle said. "I went home that day, went on the computer and started researching chickens because I really wanted to get 'em. Then I forgot for a while. But then another one of my friends got chickens, so that got me back into it."

North Korea preparing for third nuclear test, intelligence says

Recent satellite images show North Korea is digging a new underground tunnel in what appears to be preparation for a third nuclear test, according to South Korean intelligence officials.

The excavation at North Korea’s northeast Punggye-ri site, where nuclear tests were conducted in 2006 and 2009, is in its final stages, according to a report by intelligence officials that was shared Monday with The Associated Press.

Its release comes as North Korea prepares to launch a long-range rocket that Washington and others say is a cover for testing missile technology that could be used to fire on the United States.

The Obama administration said Monday it would consider both a rocket launch and an underground nuclear test as highly provocative and leave Pyongyang more isolated.

“In each case this would be an indication of North Korea’s decision at the leadership level not to take the steps that are necessary to allow North Korea to end its isolation, to rejoin the community of nations and to do something about the extreme poverty and depravation that its people suffer,” White House spokesman Jay Carney told a news briefing in Washington.

Observers fear a repeat of 2009, when international criticism of the North’s last long-range rocket launch prompted Pyongyang to walk away from nuclear disarmament negotiations and, weeks later, conduct its second nuclear test. A year later, 50 South Korean were killed in attacks blamed on the North.

“North Korea is covertly preparing for a third nuclear test, which would be another grave provocation,” said the intelligence report, which cited U.S. commercial satellite photos taken April 1. “North Korea is digging up a new underground tunnel at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, in addition to its existing two underground tunnels, and it has been confirmed that the excavation works are in the final stages.”

Montreal's Mega Brands expects 2012 to be a strong year for a comeback after turning the page on costly recalls and lawsuits that stemmed from an ill-fated acquisition in 2005

"The elves go home for the week between Christmas and New Year's. That's our only shutdown," quipped chief innovation officer Vic Bertrand, 43, during a tour of the facility.

The bustle on the premises and smiling faces of the young staff suggest a company on the cutting edge, not a spent force, though that's the impression many have in light of the financial woes that followed its $350-million (U.S.) acquisition of Rose Art Industries and its ill-fated Magnetix line of toys in 2005.

That chapter is now closed, as far as president and chief executive officer Marc Bertrand, Vic's brother, is concerned.

"We had our challenges with Magnetix. We got through it and refocused," Marc Bertrand, 44, said.

Mega Brands' long-running battle with Denmark-based blockmaker Lego also is in a legal lull. Marc Bertrand said Mega Brands is "14-0" at this point in final verdicts relating to various legal challenges around the world by Lego over alleged intellectual-property and trademark violations.

While revenue is not what it was five years ago, when Mega Brands had global sales of more than $500 million, the company still sold $376 million (U.S.) worth of toys, crafts and stationery internationally in 2011, though it eked out only a small profit of $8.3 million.

"We're working our way back," Marc Bertrand said.

"What we had last year delivered sales growth for us. But the holiday season wasn't what it should have been. Overall, the toy industry was down nine per cent in December," Vic Bertrand added.Buy low price china mosaic.

They anticipate stronger numbers from this year's lineup, which includes Hello Kitty construction toys for girls, eye-catching 3D puzzles with protruding heads and the debut products of its new licensing agreement with Blizzard Entertainment, based on its massively popular online role-playing game World of Warcraft.

While new lines extend the demographic reach, preschoolers remain its bread and-butter audience, generating about half of annual sales.

She said with the flu, people will suffer from high fevers, sore throats, painful joints and headaches.

Hook said right now she is seeing people suffering from allergies. She said the peak activity is due to tree pollen such as the maples, elms and cedars.

Hook, of St. Clare Hospital and Dean Clinic-Wisconsin Dells, said she began seeing patients with allergy problems within the last two weeks.

Dr. Christine Virnig, an allergist, has been seeing patients for about a month now.

She said outdoor molds and tree pollen are triggering problems for many of her patients.

“Outdoor molds typically start to cause allergy symptoms as soon as the snow melts,” she said. “Trees usually don’t cause symptoms this early, but with the warm weather we are seeing problems earlier than in past years.”

Virnig, who practices at St. Clare and a Dean Clinic on the west side of Madison, said many over-the-counter medications are fine for most people to try without seeing a doctor. Ex-jail officer to take stand

Warden's testimony sparked debate between Schneider and defense attorney Rolf Baumgartel. During the investigation Ketelsen submitted to a polygraph - which he has said he passed - and Baumgartel argued investigators remained focused on Ketelsen despite their own tools indicating he was not guilty.

Results of a polygraph are inadmissible in court without prior stipulation by the attorneys, and Baumgartel said he was not arguing for the inclusion of the results, but merely the question of why the results were ignored.

"Still the sheriff's office focused on him, despite evidence," Baumgartel argued.

Ultimately the question was asked, and Warden denied ignoring any investigative tools to remain focused on Ketelsen.

Warden was one of two people to conduct interviews with Ketelsen once he became a suspect. The lead investigator on the case, Detective Mark Johnson, the lone prosecution witness yet to testify, did not feel comfortable conducting the interview due to friendship with Ketelsen.

During two separate interviews conducted on Dec. 15, 2010, roughly six weeks after the initial incident that prompted the investigation, Ketelsen was questioned about whether he took the missing pills, as well as his use of Tramadol.

Ketelsen had been regularly receiving Tramadol from Tappel for treatment of kidney stones, and had received up to as many as 175 on one prescription. The maximum recommended dosage for one month is eight pills per day, or 240 a month.

"(Kidney stones) is not recurring. It's chronic," said Tappel.

According to an Ohio Automated Prescription Reporting System, or OARRS, report presented to Zandra Francis, a pharmacist with Kmart in Marietta, Ketelsen received Tramadol during the period of 2009 through 2010.

Tramadol is considered a non-controlled substance by the state of Ohio, but the Washington County Jail and the OARRS program now consider it controlled.

"It's a non-controlled substance, but it is recorded in that system (OARRS)," Francis said.

Of 87 prescriptions filled by Ketelsen, virtually all were prescribed by Tappel. Dr. Robert Grzonka, Dr. Michael Brockett and Dr. Valerie Rigg also prescribed Tramadol for Ketelsen.

Brockett and Rigg gave those prescriptions while filling in for Tappel in his office, and Tappel said he was aware of Ketelsen's visit to Grzonka.

Tappel said the amount of pills Ketelsen was receiving was correct for his condition. Ketelsen had to waive his right to doctor-patient privilege for his medical records to be discussed.

A Champion Inside and Outside the Ring

Practicing the "sweet science" for decades, Howard Davis Jr. spent years using it to deliver more punches than his opponents could handle.

Retired from a life between the ropes and coaching full-time, Davis now spends his time attempting to give MMA fighters the opportunity to reach the level of success he once enjoyed.

Davis took some time to speak with Bleacher Report to share his experiences.

Born in 1956, the Glen Cove, N. Y. native didn't experience the harsh upbringing that molds young men into fighters.

That's not to say his family didn't experience the rough times just as any family would, but Davis explained the dynamic of his hometown neighborhood.

"It was a lot different back then compared to now," Davis said. "Everyone knew their neighbors. Our neighbors would come over and ask to borrow items like sugar and it wasn't like now, where most people don't even talk to their neighbors.This page contains information about molds,"

"To this day, I haven't had a drop of alcohol and never experimented with drugs of any kind," Davis said.

The allure of drug addiction was driven off by Davis' father. He shared a story that has resonated with him for years.

"There was this guy who asked my dad if he knew about acquiring some drugs," Davis said. "My father took the guy and threw him down the stairwell."

Davis' uncle, a police officer in the area, came over the next day to inform Davis Sr. that he had in fact thrown an undercover cop down the stairwell.

Looking at his distinguished boxing career, one would assume Davis was working his jab soon after being born, but that was not the case.

"I started playing my father's congas and eventually moved onto drums," Davis said. "When I turned 12 years old I helped form a band."

In 1944 brothers Dr. Vic Yahner and Blaise Yahner, along with John Stehle, started a company known as the Kent Plastic Mold and Die Co. In the early days the company was a three-man operation that specialized in machining castings and bar stock items for local manufacturers.

The business operated in the basement of Dr. Yahner’s professional building located in downtown Kent on North Water Street between Star of the West Mill and Hometown Bank. While the machine shop operated out of the basement, the office activities were located above on the second floor, with the dental practice continuing on street level.
