Meet the machine that makes most of the things in your life

This month, we’re taking a look at some of the hidden assets of the industrial Midwest – the parts of our economy that don’t often get noticed when we talk about our strengths.

We found one hidden asset right smack in the middle of our manufacturing sector. It’s a machine that’s in literally thousands of factories across the Midwest. And, though, you might not have heard of it before, the CNC machine – and the people who operate it – are at the core of our economy.

It’s when you cut away a material. It’s basically commercial sculpting.

“Machining is at, or very close to, the foundation of manufacturing,” says Peter Zelinski, senior editor at Modern Machine Shop magazine.

Zelinski says, even if you’ve never heard of it, CNC machining is essential to your life.

“Any product you pick up and touch, it’s not too many steps away from a machining process,” he says.

Most of the parts in your car engine come from a CNC machine. Your kitchen cabinets – CNC machine. Your computer case, your iPhone earbuds – well, no. But the mold that created them – CNC machine.

Zelinski says the growth of these machines represents the biggest change in manufacturing over the last 20 years.

The people who run them are factory workers. But they also have to be computer programmers.

Steve Henkelman is a teacher at Grand Rapids Community College. He points to a computer keypad, hanging off a big gray box, and tries to explain to me the programming code for CNC machines.

Trent Ohren is one of the students in Henkelman’s class.

Ohren says he has friends who do other, more traditional, manufacturing work. CNC machining is nothing like it.

“They’re in more of the automotive,” Ohren says. “So going to the bar right after they get out of work, as opposed to when I do, it’s night and day difference. They’re covered in oil, and I smell like daisies.”

Mike Hellman is one of the people looking for a skilled CNC machinist. He’s head of human resources for Display Pack, a company in Grand Rapids, Mich. Hellman’s been looking for a machinist for three months with no luck. A few years ago, machinists were getting laid off. Now no one can find them.

“People that I know that are in the industry, they’re back to work sometimes in a week,” Hellman says. “If they just put in the effort, start going and walking into the tool and die shops, they’re going to find somebody that’s in the same boat we are, where they’re looking for somebody.”

Last year, The Manufacturing Institute surveyed companies, and found that as many as 600,000 jobs are going unfilled in this country, because there aren’t enough good workers.

And the biggest chunk of that number is for skilled production workers, including CNC machinists.

“It wouldn’t be competition from China,” he says. “The number one concern right now is finding skilled people.”

Student contest winners to design portal adornments

Henry Meyers was a prominent Bay Area architect in the mid-1930s when he designed the bas relief medallions adorning the entrances of the Caldecott Tunnel's two original bores.

Later this year, an as-yet-unchosen student -- a kindergartner,Omega Plastics are leading plastic injection moulding and injection mould tooling specialists. a high school senior, or someone in between -- will design the medallions for the $391 million fourth bore under construction on Highway 24 between Oakland and Orinda.

Caltrans will hold a competition limited to students from Contra Costa and Alameda counties to submit the design for six artistic medallions to be cast in concrete above the tunnel opening, the state highway agency announced.

The six new hexagon-shaped medallions -- each about 36 inches high -- will be public art for the ages.

"We wanted to engage the two communities on both sides of the tunnel," said Jeanne Gorham, the landscape architect for Caltrans District 4. "It's a way to give them a sense of ownership of the project, due to open in late 2013."

Meyers may have had a lot of help from draftsman George Klinkhardt in designing the tunnel exterior and medallions, a Caltrans report suggests. In fact, Klinkhardt may have designed the entire tunnel exterior, the reports says.

Still, Meyers had responsibility over the entire project design as chief architect.

Meyers, who grew up in Livermore and whose Alameda home has been turned into a museum, designed more than 200 buildings, including Highland Hospital in Oakland, the Posey Tube in Alameda and 10 veterans memorial buildings, including the ones in Livermore and Pleasanton.

Orinda City Councilwoman Amy Worth said she is enthusiastic about using student designers.

"I think our talented youth can produce fresh ideas," said Worth, who serves on a Contra Costa County transportation commission that contributed $122 million of county sales tax toward the project.

Madurai's merchant community terms FSSA detrimental

The merchant community in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, has called the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, (FSSA), detrimental to the interests of farmers and self-help groups in its present form and urged the Centre to postpone the enforcement of the Act.

Last Raptor Rolls Off Lockheed Martin Line

After 20 years of design and production, what began as an effort to buy 650 fighters capable of evading former Soviet radar defenses to escort bombers to targets there came to an end with Raptor 195 rolling out of the final assembly facility Dec. 13—22 years after the Berlin Wall came down. Thanks to Engineering 6 and its 115-thousand square feet of labs and classes, the program is no longer housed entirely in the Douglas Wright Engineering Building, the first facility to go up on the Waterloo campus in 1958.

The department now has 800 undergraduate students, 155 grad students, 35 faculty, 15 staff and more than 4,000 alumni. Research funding tops $5-million a year.

Some things haven’t changed with the program over time.

“What was exciting about the early days was that it was extremely dynamic,” said Tom Fahidy, a 77-year-old professor emeritus who came to the chemical engineering program in 1964. “We were always encouraged to do new things.”

“Your job is to put that other lab out of business,” chemical engineering department chair Tom Duever told Higgins.

Higgins was good at math and chemistry in high school. That’s why he got into chemical engineering. He graduated but came back to get his PhD.

“A lot of people in my program go to work for the oil companies,” said Higgins, now in his seventh year at Waterloo. “I wanted to steer off, do something more substantial.”

So he devotes his time to making better fuel cells for a better tomorrow.

One day, fuel cells may fade into insignificance too as new options emerge.

Even entire disciplines can fall out of favour in a program, just as Waterloo abandoned the study of metallurgy 20 years ago as student interest waned and faculty retired.

Eric Blondeel, a 25-year-old grad student from Calgary, works with German exchange student Andreas Wagner in another lab at Engineering 6. A speedy response to the next global pandemic may depend on their work.

Meanwhile, third-year undergrad student Erin Matheson is just back from a co-op work term in Calgary with Canadian Natural Resources, one of the largest independent crude oil and natural gas producers in the world.

Maybe she’ll develop new ways for companies to get at oil without having to drill new holes — build a better straw, as it were.

Or maybe that oil will become insignificant and Matheson’s work will become unnecessary if Higgins finds a way to make fuel cells more stable, efficient and cheaper.

Attempting to outsmart or just to ambush a whitetail can be challenging at this time of year. Hunting is always challenging, but this season has been much different than any in recent memory. With the late rut, deer are still running and that should continue for the next few days.

Territorial prison, known as the 'hellhole,' guards decades of Yuma history

For the convicts locked inside, the Yuma Territorial Prison would become known as the "hellhole."

But for the thousands who followed, the living legend and symbol of the Wild West has become a character in a true story about a time when desperados, murderers and thieves were brought to justice.

According to historians Thomas Edwin Farish and Jay Wagoner, in late 1868 the 5th Arizona Territorial Legislative Assembly approved building a prison near Phoenix. But by the 8th Arizona Territorial Legislative Assembly, held in early 1875, no funds had been appropriated for its construction. As a result the territory still lacked a place to incarcerate convicted criminals.

According to Jesse Torres, former park manager of the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park,Whilst oil paintings for sale are not deadly, it was during the 1875 session that two Yuma politicians took action to bring the prison here by amending a bill.

"Some of our local lawmakers, Jose Maria Redondo and R.B. Kelly, somehow amended the bill so when it came up for a vote they scratched out the word Phoenix and wrote in Yuma," Torres said. "That is how Yuma became owners of the territorial prison."

The Territorial Prison was then authorized by the Legislature in 1875 with $25,000 budgeted for the project. Construction began on April 28, 1876, and a few prisoners were pressed into service to build the cells. On July 1, 1876, the first seven inmates entered the prison and were locked into the new cells they had created.

During the 33 years the prison operated, a total of 3,069 prisoners, including 29 women, lived within the walls. Their crimes ranged from murder to polygamy, with grand larceny, a crime involving the wrongful acquisition of the personal property of another person, being the most common.

Out of the 3,069 prisoners, 26 escaped successfully, but only two were from within the prison confines. Eight others died attempting escape.

"Yuma turned out to be an ideal location for the prison," Torres said. "For one thing,Our high risk merchant account was down for about an hour and a half, it was the furthest point from any other towns in the territory of Arizona. Also, you had natural resources such as the confluence of the Colorado and Gila rivers,then used cut pieces of Ceramic tile garden hose to get through the electric fence. the town of Yuma, and to the south of course you had the desert. It was quite a deterrent to somebody trying to escape."

Another way to ensure escaped convicts were recaptured quickly were the trackers of the Quechan Indian Tribe, Torres said.

"They had trackers that were given $50 to return each escaped convict. They had a bell at the prison used to sound the alarm. Once the Indians across the river heard the bell ringing they'd come over and be hired to track convicts down."

The trackers had the option to bring back the escapees dead or alive, "but the Indians preferred to bring them back alive because they reasoned if a man has escaped once maybe he will try to escape again," and be worth another $50, Torres explained.

A majority of the prisoners served only portions of their sentences due to the ease with which paroles and pardons were obtained.

But some never made it out of the hellhole alive, even though no executions took place at the prison because capital punishment was administered by the county government. One hundred eleven persons died while serving their sentences, most from tuberculosis, which was common throughout the territory.

Several were shot trying to escape, a few were killed by cell mates, one was killed by falling rocks, a couple were bitten by rattlesnakes while on work detail, and a few drowned in the Gila River, Torres said.

Of those who died,Polycore porcelain tiles are manufactured as a single sheet, 104 were buried in a cemetery on Prison Hill where they remain today. The other convicts were shipped home to their relatives and buried elsewhere.

Even though there were deaths, written evidence indicates that the prison was humanely administered,Flossie was one of a group of four chickens in a RUBBER MATS . and was a model institution for its time. The only punishments were the three dark cells for inmates who broke prison regulations, and the ball and chain for those who tried to escape.

During their free time, prisoners hand-crafted many items. Those items were sold at public bazaars held at the prison on Sundays after church services. Prisoners also had regular medical attention, and access to a good hospital.

Schooling was available for convicts, and many learned to read and write in prison. The prison housed one of the first "public" libraries in the territory, and the fee charged to visitors for a tour of the institution was used to purchase books. One of the early electrical generating plants in the West furnished power for lights and ran a ventilation system in the cell block.

"After 7 p.m., the Territorial Prison would provide the town of Yuma with electricity," Torres said. "In exchange, the town of Yuma provided the prison with water."

While the convicts considered the prison a hellhole, Yuma residents thought of it more as the "Country Club on the Colorado" because of its amenities that townspeople didn't enjoy yet, such as electricity and the library.

By 1907, the prison was severely overcrowded, and there was no room on Prison Hill for expansion. The convicts constructed a new facility in Florence. The last prisoner left Yuma on Sept. 15, 1909.

But the life of the prison wasn't over. The Yuma Union High School occupied the buildings from 1910 to 1914. This would lead Yuma High to adopt a criminal as their mascot in 1917, the only such mascot in the United States.

Later, empty cells provided free lodging for hobos riding the freights in the 1920s, and sheltered many homeless families during the Depression when they were turned back from crossing the Ocean-to-Ocean Bridge into California by police. Much of the prison complex was eventually destroyed by townspeople who considered the complex a source for free building materials. In addition, fires, weathering, and railroad construction destroyed the prison walls and all buildings except the cells, main gate and guard tower, which remain today.

The first request to preserve the prison came in the early 1930s, and in 1939 local residents began to raise funds for renovation of the guard tower and construction of a museum to be located on the site of the mess hall. The city of Yuma operated the museum and prison area until 1960 when it was taken over by Arizona State Parks.

Group from Regina to construct homes for Haitian refugees

Some Boston Pizza employees from Regina will soon be en route to the Dominican Republic to help construct two homes for Haitian refugees who are rebuilding their lives.

Kathie Werschler, one of eight Boston Pizza employees, will leave Regina Friday with a Boston Pizza alumni and two other Reginans on the trip of a lifetime.

The 11 Regina residents will be among 26 Canadian volunteers all affiliated with Boston Pizza who will stay in Sosua, a town outside of Puerto Plata, for the 10-day project.Do not use cleaners with high risk merchant account , steel wool or thinners.

Boston Pizza Foundation a charitable organization ¡ªis paying for the supplies and tradespeople to build two homes. The foundation has partnered with Absolute Leadership Development, a federally incorporated charity that runs Hero Holiday.

Besides replacing shanties with homes, volunteers will assist at a local orphanage and walk in the shoes of a Haitian man for a day.

"The father of one of the families makes his living by collecting recyclable materials and then selling them that's how he supports his family," Werschler said. "So one day, we're doing an ¡®In Their Shoes' experience.ceramic zentai suits for the medical," Our goal is to triple that family's income for the day so our teams will be going through the garbage dump and looking for recycled materials."

Werschler heard about a Hero Holiday at a Miami conference she attended in February.

"I came back so excited," she said in an interview Tuesday.

Her excitement about the project was contagious at work and at home. Consequently, two of her daughters, Rebecca, 25, and Kimberly, 20, will accompany her on the relief effort.

"My youngest daughter just came back from Colombia doing a humanitarian trip there, so her eyes are already wide open, but we don't really know what to expect," Werschler said.

To get there, $19,000 had to be raised at numerous fundraisers to cover the cost of the volunteers' airfare and accommodations.

"Most of the people are restaurant servers and students who don't have a lot of money ... Raising the money just to go on this trip was a bit daunting," Werschler said.

From the funds raised, $1,500 will purchase furnishings for the two homes and buy items for the families and community.

"We have been able to fulfil everything on the list that included bedding, cookware, hygiene products and specific things for the children of these families," Werschler said. "One was a doll for one of the little girls and baseball gloves and balls for the boys."

She hopes to cram all of the goodies into five bags.Whilst magic cube are not deadly,
