Polly's Paper Studio, Lucky Penny Mosaics Open in Downtown Dexter

Polly's Paper Studio, located at 3238 Broad St., is a specialty boutique that sells hundreds of items for scrapbooking,Find beautiful landscape oil paintings here. handmade cards, and other paper crafts. Across the street, Lucky Penny Mosaics, located at 3205 Broad St., features a variety of classes for basic and advanced mosaic art instruction.

"We really love the family appeal and artsy vibe of Dexter," Polly's owner Ginny Nemchak said about her decision to open the store. "With all the downtown restaurants and stores, Dexter has this neighborhood feel but it's also a destination location."

Nemchak has been operating Polly's Paper Studio in Pinckney for the past two years, but decided to relocate the business to Dexter to capitilize on traffic from Ann Arbor and other surrounding communities.

"Fortunately, scrapbooking shops are few and far between, and if you want the more exclusive brands sometimes you have to travel. The nature of the craft makes our shop a destination spot that will hopefully bring other people into town, which will help other businesses as well," Nemchak said.

With a 20-year career in retail, Nemchak said she decided to open her own business after a friend turned her onto scrapbooking.

"I was a stay-at-home mom for several years, but I also like to work, so opening my own business allowed me to do something I enjoy while still getting to spend time with my family," she said.

The store offers 1,800 paper patterns, adhesives, embellishments and other scrapbooking products. It will also offer classes in handmade card making, scrapbooking and altered art projects.

"Paper crafting in general is an afforable hobby, and I think people like to give a handcrafted item as a gift because it's more personable. It's also a craft that you can manage in a small amount of space if you are doing it at home," she said. "We'll also let people work in the store."

Lisa Wandres, co-owner of Artistica in Dexter, opened Lucky Penny Mosaics above Life is Good, to expand her home-based mosaic classes. Wandres, who considers herself an "artist by accident" began her lifelong love affair with mosaics 10 years ago after learning about the craft.

"I was curious (about art) and discoverd courses on mosaic and luckily it turned out to be my thing,Capture the look and feel of real stone or China ceramic tile flooring with Alterna by Armstrong." Wandres explained. "I have since ... dedicated myself to leaning more about mosaics and also to broadening my artistic influences."

Wandres has been selling work on commission with moderate success, which led to her decision to offer classes of her own for students.

The studio will offer a four-week two-hour basics class for $135, with materials and supplies. Manufacturers face skilled-worker shortage

Bucks and Montgomery County manufacturers are meeting Wednesday morning to talk about a key issue - after years of declines in manufacturing employment, they are facing looming shortages of highly skilled workers.

From her vantage point, she can see some of her company's most important employees - the 18 toolmakers who create the molds that are the heart of the operation.

"We're not the only ones" worried about a skills gap. There are also shortages, she said, in people trained to be machinists and setup technicians.

So eager are the area's manufacturers to address the issue of a looming shortage of skilled manufacturing employees that they are forming their own grassroots group - the Bux-Mont Manufacturing Consortium. The Wednesday meeting, to be at the North Montco Technical Career Center in Lansdale, is its second.

On the agenda are discussions of how to engage trade schools in the region to build a talent pipeline and a review of existing training funding and availability through government workforce investment boards and community colleges.

The group was just beginning to galvanize last spring when the Middle Bucks Institute of Technology announced that it would close its precision machining program. Enrollment had dwindled to five students.

Local manufacturers rallied, unsuccessfully, to keep the program open.

In the fall, the Bucks County Workforce Investment Board chose the school to host a manufacturing job fair. Nearly every manufacturer that set up a table at the event was looking for a machinist.

Some said that they would hire a machinist even without an immediate opening, just to get them on the payroll.

K'nex toolmakers earn between $18 and $30 an hour, and must work 55 hours weekly. Even the lowest paid earns more than $1,100 a week with overtime.

"What we have to do is make sure that manufacturing jobs are attractive to parents, teachers, and students," Christman said.

Meanwhile, the fledgling consortium, through the Delaware Valley Industrial Resource Center, has already been networking to explore the possibilities of a training program aimed at teaching basic manufacturing skills such as shop math, precision measuring, and blueprint reading.

The DVIRC is a partially government-funded group set up to aid manufacturers with business issues. Last Thursday and Friday, the DVIRC organized a presentation from M.O.S.T., or Mobile Outreach Skills Training.

M.O.S.T. houses its training lab,Online fine art gallery of quality original landscape oil paintings, with computer simulated welding and basic machining, in a tractor-trailer or bus, parked last week outside DVIRC's offices in the Navy Yard.

"I'm struggling to find qualified people that have good mathematics skills," said Dawn Thompson, who attended a session Thursday. She's a human resources manager at Fiber-Line Inc.

"Recruiting for the third shift is impossible," she said. She's looking for basic manufacturing workers, who will earn $13 an hour, more for the night shift. Last year, she hired 33 entry-level machine operators.

The M.O.S.T. program, run by TimeWise Management Systems in Florida,The Transaction Group offers the best high risk merchant account services, parks its training van in the employer's parking lot. It handles initial recruiting and the employer commits to hiring anyone who makes it through the two-week training period.

After the two weeks, four months of on-the-job training follow, with a mentoring relationship continuing for six months. Studded and ready to roll

Last week during his day off from the bike shop, Niles Gagnon drilled dozens of holes in his tires and pushed metallic screws through the rubber.

He and another Inside Edge staffer, Trevor Lewis, are planning on taking their bikes outside this time of the year, but it's not because the weather is nice. The two are first-time ice bikers, adding studs to their tires to avoid wiping out on black ice and so they can ride along frozen surfaces like ponds and lakes.

Skiing has been lousy, Lewis said, "and I wanted to get back on my mountain bike."

Gagnon added 50 studs to a front wheel and 100 studs to his back wheel, but said he'll have to double the number in the front.

He put the screw heads on the inside lining, with the threads extending outward. He then added duct tape to the screws inside the wheel and a rubber lining to the inside.

Gagnon said he plans to ride on trails along Gurney Lane in Queensbury, using parts of trails where water has frozen over inside tracks from all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles so he can bike over ice.

Bob Reardon, a staffer at Queensbury-based Rick's Bike Shop, bikes to work from South Glens Falls all year round,Spro Tech has been a plastic module & Mold Maker, and he uses studded tires during the winter.

Although this winter has been mild, he said the studs come in handy for black ice.

On wintry days, he dresses in layers like he's hiking up Mount Marcy and adds rain gear for all the slush.

Rick's Bike Shop has made studded tires in the shop for customers, but haven't had many takers, staffers at the shop said.

Reardon remembers ice biking being mentioned as an event for the Lake George Winter Carnival about 10 years ago, but nothing ever developed.

The sport might be more fun for participants than observers, although some ice-biking races add a roller derby-like element, with winding tracks on ice.

Conditions must be just right, Lake George had too much snow last year for ice biking, Reardon said, and this year, you need to go farther north to find frozen bodies of water.

Cyclists who use studded tires on an off-road path can also find their bikes have been transformed into a mobile collector for leaves. Reardon likened the studs to a person using a sharp stick to pick up trash in the park.

Prices can also be a deterrent. Jared O'Connor, a shop technician at Inside Edge, said commercially studded tires can cost as much as $150. Many cyclists choose to buy sheet metal screws at hardware stores and do the work themselves.

For Gagnon, the Inside Edge sales associate, the custom job cost him just $10 and two hours of his time.

There are already 71 web pages of complaints on just one customer forum, and it's growing.

For more than a year, iTunes users have been reporting on online Apple customer forums that their accounts have been hacked, their gift cards spent, their PayPal accounts used or their store credit exhausted.

One typical forum complaint, from a user identifying themselves as MacAurora: "I was hacked today for almost $50 in Apple gift card money. First someone gained access to my account and 'downloaded' the free Kingdom Conquest app at 2:45 a.m. when I was asleep, and then bought almost $50 worth of In App Purchases from SEGA Corporation. SEGA says I should complain to Apple and ask for a refund. Apple says it's not responsible for In App Purchases."

The iTunes store is a massive network, with more than 200 million active accounts. In December 2011, Apple announced that more than 100 million applications had been downloaded from the app store in Australia in just one year. Near-death experience emboldens physician

Dr. Bartolome Kairuz says his lucky day was Sept. 22. That's the day he nearly died from internal bleeding from a ruptured artery.

The 80-year-old physician, an avid fitness buff, was exercising in a favorite gym.

"I lifted 40 pounds with my left arm and I felt this unimaginable pain in my back," he said. He collapsed and blacked out.

A friend saw it happen.

"He was one of my patients," Kairuz said. "He knew to call 911."

Emergency room doctors at St. Anthony's Medical Center diagnosed what happened and got him in surgery.

"If they hadn't worked so quickly, I wouldn't be here now."

When Kairuz awakened, he learned that he was a rare survivor of an aneurysm that had ruptured near his aorta just below his abdomen.

"I was lucky to be alive," he said.

An aneurysm is a bulge in a blood vessel wall weakened most often by vascular disease. The internal bleeding from a rupture of a bulge is often fatal.

Kairuz also had two other aneurysms that hadn't burst.

"These were massive aneurysms," said Dr. Brian Peterson, the vascular surgeon who worked on Kairuz. The operation took four hours and about 18 units of blood and blood products.

The condition is deadly because it happens fast and often without symptoms, Peterson said. Symptoms such as backaches or stomach ache often are disregarded, he said.

The vision of these leaders in fact became a formidable force that nurtured a people centric approach as opposed to the urban elitist and feudalistic political and economic ideologies that prevailed.

This transformation was subsequently taken forward by several progressive leaders such as late Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, late Dr. N M Perera and late Dr. Colvin R De Silva.

I recall watching with amusement as a young Member of Parliament at that time, how opposing forces got together to destruct this progressive path. I am sure that the Hon. Senior Members of this august Assembly would recall how this path was reversed in 1977.

This nation was placed on to a very destructive path from 1977. This path was overshadowed by neo liberal economic policies on the one hand and separatist terrorist activities, on the other. This caused tremendous hardships to the general public. The whole nation became a victim of terrorism. Democratic values got eroded. A revengeful culture came into being. Many wrongful activities such as international money laundering, drug trafficking, smuggling and arms dealing were carried out on the pretext of terrorism.

Separatist terrorist activities got aggregated to such a dangerous level, and plans were virtually drawn up to recognize a divided administration. In short, all hopes of our people to live in a unitary state were virtually shattered.

Although our country remained to be poor, many countries that were poor had by then emerged to be strong economies. The world had witnessed a change.

We also need to give some time for the world to realize that the preconceived views that they have consequent to the distorted facts spread by the global network of the LTTE, are 3 wrong. However, I am extremely happy to note that countries that respect democracy are gradually accepting the position being explained by us, having given due consideration to hard facts.

The opposition should also work with us to find solutions to the problems faced by our people and also to find such solutions while ensuring unity.

We need to understand that forced solutions cannot be imposed to resolve our internal issues by getting trapped to external forces. PayPal unveils mobile payments for in-store shopping

PayPal has unveiled a mobile payment initiative for shoppers that doesn't require near-field communication (NFC) technology inside smartphones.

The system relies instead on using smartphones and other mobile devices to scan product bar codes and to authorize payments through PayPal mobile accounts. Users will also be able to use credit-card scanning terminals commonly seen in grocery stores: The user inputs a phone number and PIN on the terminal's keypad instead of swiping a credit or debit card.

PayPal President Scott Thompson laid out the basics of the plan in a blog posted Wednesday. In the blog, he also took a swipe at competitors, including Google , MasterCard, Visa and others, who are working with NFC in smartphones for a mobile wallet.

I have been having a lot of fun feeding worms my garbage. We have something you could either call a "worm bin" or a "home vermicomposting system," and we throw our food scraps, banana peels, melon rinds, moldy bread -- you name it -- into that. There are a couple of pounds of worms in the bin, and they gratefully accept the waste, eat it, and turn it into worm castings, which is basically organic matter that is broken down in such a way that it's very good for our garden.

Here's how it works. I started with two pounds of redworms, purchased through mail order (through a Vermont source). I set up a plastic bin with a few buckets of partially rotted horse manure. This serves as the worm "bedding." Whenever our compost crock is full, I take it into the basement, dig a hole in the bedding, empty the crock, and cover it with a bit of bedding.
