They were dyeing eggs in the Alvarez household this Easter.

They just were not using the eggs the family normally eats.

"Well ... we dyed some store-bought ones," 12-year-old Kyle explains.

That is because the egg of choice for the Alvarez family has a brown shell, sometimes one with dark speckles — the kind of egg laid by one of five hens in the family's backyard chicken coop.

Kyle, his sisters and his parents are not alone.

The backyard chicken movement is turning suburban homeowners into part-time subsistence farmers nationwide. And the trend has plenty of practitioners in Berkshire County.

"Chickens are our biggest subject as far as interlibrary loans are concerned," said Pat McLeod, director of the David and Joyce Milne Public Library. "We've bought maybe 10 books in the last six months. It's that and goats."

At Pittsfield's Hancock Shaker Village, they have a four-hour workshop scheduled for Saturday, June 2.

"This is our second year of offering a backyard poultry workshop," HSV Marketing Director Laura Wolf said. "Prior to that, we had offered a poultry session as one of our 'Return and Learn' presentations on Saturday afternoons, and attendance for that particular topic was so high that we decided to convert that into a more thorough, hands-on workshop in which participants come away with more information, experience and some supplies."

Kyle's mom, Monica, said the Mount Greylock High Regional student was responsible for sparking the family's interest in residential livestock.

"I was at a friend's house, and they had chickens, and I thought it was pretty cool," Kyle said. "I went home that day, went on the computer and started researching chickens because I really wanted to get 'em. Then I forgot for a while. But then another one of my friends got chickens, so that got me back into it."

North Korea preparing for third nuclear test, intelligence says

Recent satellite images show North Korea is digging a new underground tunnel in what appears to be preparation for a third nuclear test, according to South Korean intelligence officials.

To date, though, Americans are not widely acquainted with SIMcards, partly because Sprint and Verizon Wireless have large customer bases that use CDMA and have never used GSM phones with SIMs, noted Andrew Borg, an analyst at Aberdeen Group.

The question of how security is incorporated into a phone isn’t expected to squelch growth of NFC payments in the U.S., but could play a role in how fast it gains popularity, Borg said.

The company recently held its 65th Anniversary Banquet at the Rusty Nail for both current and former employees. In addition to handing out service awards, the company also distributed profit-sharing checks – continuing a Colonial tradition started in the 1950s.

Matt Metcalf, Colonial CEO, shared the company’s history:

In 1944 brothers Dr. Vic Yahner and Blaise Yahner, along with John Stehle, started a company known as the Kent Plastic Mold and Die Co. In the early days the company was a three-man operation that specialized in machining castings and bar stock items for local manufacturers.

The business operated in the basement of Dr. Yahner’s professional building located in downtown Kent on North Water Street between Star of the West Mill and Hometown Bank. If you drive by now, it will stand out as the storefront that is not quite parallel to the street, currently the home of the Franklin School of Dance.

While the machine shop operated out of the basement, the office activities were located above on the second floor, with the dental practice continuing on street level.

Going from the shop to or from the office was a quick and easy run up or down a fire escape. At least it was easy in the summer, as the first person to make the trip on winter days had to worry about the icicles that would form on the steps and sometimes block the door. A hammer was hung outside during the winter and the first to visit the office each day would have to knock some of the large icicles away just to get the door open.

On Jan. 15, 1947, the company was incorporated and a year later the name was changed to Colonial Machine Co. As the company grew, more space was needed so land was purchased at the corner of Mogadore Road and Cherry Street. Ground was broken in 1951 and Colonial soon had a new home. The original building consisted of a small machine bay with a wooden roof, offices and a narrow engineering department above the offices.

It was during the 1950s that Vic Yahner had the idea of profit sharing and, when the year permitted, would issue bonus checks – a tradition that still is followed today.

Ministers defend rapid cut to solar power subsidy

Ministers have argued that they had to act quickly to slash subsidies to small-scale solar power because the cost of panels has dropped by nearly half in the past year – much faster than the previous government envisaged when it set up the scheme.

The government received fierce criticism from the solar industry and environmentalists after the cut and the decision was ruled unlawful in the courts. But ministers have argued that overly generous payments to investors who installed solar panels were in danger of draining the scheme of funds.

They are expected to announce on Thursday a change to the way so-called feed-in tariffs are administered and an injection of funding for the scheme.

Energy minister Greg Barker said the figures on the costs of solar, which he said were independently arrived at, showed the government was right to cut feed-in tariffs. "The costs have come down much faster than Ed Miliband thought in 2010, when the payment was fixed. That has led to much greater deployment," he said.

"We had to take quick action. I know that [the changes to feed-in tariffs] have damaged confidence in the industry. But the new figures speak for themselves."

He said the price falls were good news for consumers and the renewables industry: "There is the potential for solar power to become competitive with fossil fuels without subsidy within the lifetime of this parliament. Solar has gone from being one of the most expensive forms of renewable energy to one of the cheapest."

An average domestic solar power installation cost 15,000 in 2010, but now costs about 8,000. This year the cost could fall to 6,000, according to research from the consultancy Parsons Brinckerhoff, commissioned by the Department of Energy and Climate Change. The report will be placed in the House of Commons library on Wednesday in response to a parliamentary question on the issue.

When the consultation on feed-in tariffs was launched in October, the costs of photovoltaic systems had fallen by about a third since 2009, when the original tariffs were set. The vast majority of people living in failed buildings are low-income and uninsured. When they get sick, they go to the hospital. And the city is left holding the bill.

A new pilot program, created by housing advocates and healthcare workers, aims to increase awareness of the public health costs resulting from distressed, overleveraged buildings. The program sends healthcare providers and social workers into buildings on the brink of receivership to identify and treat housing-related illnesses. The team hopes to help tenants, compile data on the health outcomes of living in buildings in poor condition, and eventually determine the actual cost to the city.

Dina Levy, Director of Organizing and Policy at the Urban Homesteading Assistance Board, or UHAB, says that what is happening in these buildings is a public health crisis. “It’s an outrageous moral problem, but it’s also a financial problem in whatever geographic space it’s happening in.”

She explains that when banks and owners fail to care for buildings, the costs of that failing often shows up in the medical bills of the people who live in those buildings, and that these tend to be low-income people without healthcare, so that cost is ultimately absorbed by taxpayers and the city. Until now, she says, there has been anecdotal evidence that people in certain buildings are getting sick, but a study would provide the first quantifiable direct connection.

“What we have observed is that people are getting sick and don’t have the resources to get adequate medical care,“ she said. “Why are banks and landlords allowed to harm people physically, and why should we be paying the cost of that?”

The project has gone out to buildings four times since Labor Day, and plans to do more outings this year. Members of the Committee of Interns and Residents of SEIU Healthcare, collaborating with the Family Medicine Department at Bronx Lebanon Hospital, the Pediatric Department at Jacobi Medical Center, Urban Homestead Assistance Board (UHAB), and Workforce Housing, created the Doctors’ House Visit Program as part of a larger community outreach program, the Healthy Bronx Initiative.

Tim Foley, Political Director of the Committee of Interns and Residents for SEIU Healthcare, said that the committee was drawn into involvement in the project by its members. “We were getting feedback from members who were frustrated to only be dealing with the effects of illnesses and not the causes. “

Levy says that as of July 2011, 2239 Creston had 431 outstanding code violations, while 2241 had 431 violations. The former owners, Victor and Alan Fein, originally bought the Creston buildings along with several others in the Bronx on a loan from Astoria Federal Savings Bank. Three of those projects – including the Creston --have since gone into foreclosure.

A Village Voice article from March 2010 names the brothers as owners of three Bronx properties listed as being among the city’s worst. The article says the Feins have operated since the mid-'90s under various company names including Cherokee Partners and Apache Properties. Orlando Moronta, the building super, has lived in the building since 1998. He says the Feins barely contacted him in the decade he owned the building. The nonprofit has established a separate entity that worked with local housing development agencies to lease out the equipment over a 10-year span.

Pierre Moses, a project manager with Make It Right, said Thursday that the solar program recently worked with Volunteers of America on a multiunit, multifamily development in Covington, which is different from the single-family units that the initiative has become known for.

Make It Right has set out to build 150 homes in the Lower 9th Ward loaded with green features like solar panels and rainwater collectors, with half completed so far.

Moses called this latest project "a natural progression for us" to start looking at other opportunities and expanding the effort.

"We're sort of exploring options on how to expand our program," he said. "I think that there's certainly just a vast amount of demand for a solar solution that doesn't require an upfront capital outlay. We understood that a while ago, but we were still focusing on organizations that had synergies with Make It Right."

Vermont dairy farms scramble to get through winter after storm destroys corn, hay for feed

While the Aug. 28 storm flooded only 6,000 of the state’s 92,000 acres of feed corn, the water was concentrated in certain areas, hitting farmers there hard. In some cases, the water flattened their plants. In others, silt left by the flood contaminated corn and the dampness fostered mold.

Many farmers are now scrambling to find feed, buying from friends who were luckier or looking to neighbor states. In a different year, they might get feed from New York or Pennsylvania, but those states also were hit by Irene and then by Tropical Storm Lee. There’s grain in the Midwest, but the farther it’s shipped, the more it costs.

Vermont Agriculture Secretary Chuck Ross said the feed shortage is adding to hardship already suffered in the storm that killed six and damaged more than 500 miles of roads,I have just spent two weeks shopping for tile and have discovered China Porcelain tile. damaged or destroyed dozens of bridges and inundated several communities. U.S. solar companies urge SolarWorld drop China case
