A weekend at the LVL UP Expo
The weekend of Feb 16 and 17 may have been nothing more than a
recovery weekend from Valentines Day for most; but for those in the
Henderson, NV area, it marked the launch of the LVL UP Expo.
Self-proclaimed as being a “convention that covers the vast fields of
gaming”, the LVL UP Expo brought to Henderson an outlet for all types of
gamers, from table-top to arcade,We've had a lot of people asking where

Walking in to the older-looking convention center for the first time, I felt like I had walked into a broken-down hospital. Drab, brown walls led me down a hallway of doors labeled with event names until I reached the main reception area. It wasn’t until this open space did I feel like I was about to attend an event made for nerds, gamers, and other walks of geek-life. After a warm and enthusiastic greeting from a quartet of LVL UP Expo volunteers and employees, who proceeded to tag me with a wrist band, I walked through a set of double doors into a space that was quite shockingly small.
Being the initial run of the LVL UP Expo, I expected a few hitches to throw things off balance,Can you spot the answer in the fridge magnet? but I was unprepared for the cramped space that the Henderson Convention Center really allowed. Whether through partaking in the tournament or simply awaiting for a spot to free up, guests also had the opportunity to jump onto the online multiplayer shoot “Primal Carnage”. Though its current span of coverage is relatively small in comparison to what it deserves, my time in “Primal Carnage’s” arena of human vs. dinosaur battles left me craving more, something most current multiplayer shooters just don’t do. A small chat I had with founder of Lukewarm Media and “Primal Carnage” producer, Aaron Pollack, confirmed that, while “Primal Carnage” will be without a console release, the developer will support its title to the fullest.
The cream of the crop of LVL UP Expo wasn’t the tournaments or the available merchandise, though. It was the sheer level of interactivity between local and out of town influences in the gaming industry. Meet and Greets for the cast of the local production of “Evil Dead The Musical 4D” and the internet radio comedy show “Jim and Them” were good ways to pass the time and get to know the people behind the personas. Indy game developer, Lukewarm Games, also held a panel discussion regarding game development, ensuring that at least some portion of this entertaining event was interestingly education.
What there is to complain about is minimal. As mentioned previously, the event space is somewhat cramped. It was difficult to move in-between booths, and oftentimes I questioned whether or not I should be stepping over the slew of wires on the floor. Booth variety would also be a welcomed plus, as there seemed to be three or four booths selling the Perler Pixel Palls. Other local talents brought to the table merchandise such as white tile painted with gaming’s favorite characters, but overall, there wasn’t a whole lot to browse through.
Ultimately, the crew behind the LVL UP Expo did a fantastic job of bringing gaming to downtown Henderson. The ambiance simply reeked of gaming expo, especially with familiar faces, such as an impressively accurate rendition of an Umbrella Special Forces Soldier (complete with an astounding make-up of Albert Wesker’s signature pistol). From what was experienced and what could be seen, there doesn’t seem to be a reason as to why 2014 shouldn’t see a return of this fantastic set-up.

Local, national or international, businesses are starting to get rid of phone numbers on their websites, Mattia said. There have been no studies that she’s aware of that tracks the impact of reducing phone number access on websites because the trend is so new.
“I guess it’s a retraction in one sense because it’s a reduction in visibility in a phone number,” Mattia said. “In the other sense, it’s just a shift in how we’re communicating.”
Mattia said the trend is a reaction to more people getting accustomed to using computers and email.
Jennifer McCoy owns the Mobile Ad Group that specializes in web application development and advertising partnership consulting. Originally from Fernandina Beach, McCoy said she’s in the process of rebranding her company as she’s relocating to New York City and said she’s never provided phone numbers.
“As a small business, we’re working from multiple locations and we’re constantly moving so our main point of contact is either from email or cellphone,” McCoy said. “Most of our employees don’t feel comfortable putting their cellphones on the Internet.”
Strange acknowledged business from phone orders generate the most credit card fraud, so he’s expanded his options for dealing with customers who don’t come into the 5,500-square-foot shop on Anastasia Boulevard.
Strange has incorporated a pop-up chat window operated by a store representative who engages in real time. A Surf Station worker will ask Internet shoppers how they can be helped, detail specifics about a surfboard or offer suggestions on swimsuits among all the other beach gear sold at the store.
“The live chat is another way for our customers to connect with us,” Strange said. “A lot of times they’re in their cubicle at work and can’t call us.”
Mattia said the chat windows on business websites offer a good middle ground without phone contact because it still provides the customer interaction with a human being.
Strange said he’s been offering the chat window on Surf Station’s website for about three years. But there are risks in staffing the workers who chat with customers. The employees have to be near experts with the inventory offered at the store and they have to have a flair for courteous, possibly even entertaining, Internet chat.
“There’s been a learning curve and our staff has to be trained. We have to know our product real well because there are a lot of questions that come from left field. It can appear to be a big waste of time unless you really invested the time and effort to train your staff up front,” Strange said.
The value of Internet sales can’t be ignored, though, Strange said. Surf Station’s website sales soared in 2012, jumping by 32 percent over the $500,000 in Internet sales in 2011, he said.

MENA regions calls for advances in mobile payment industry
Mobile commerce expert Sammy Tuffaha called for the
telecommunications companies in the MENA region to join efforts to
develop the mobile payment industry which would provide an integrated
commerce interface allowing mobile phone users to pay bills, make
purchases, and complete their financial transactions via their mobile
phones.
Tuffaha made such comments through his participation in the Electronic and Mobile Payment Conference held by the Information and Communications Technology Association of Jordan (int@j) to highlight vital current and future issues related to electronic and mobile payment industry, challenges, and opportunities in Jordan.
"Mobile commerce is the future of personal financial transactions around the globe. However, as the electronic and web-payment services have not yet matured in the MENA region, the transition to mobile commerce entails rigorous consumer education. "Mobile-payment projects have become a priority for most telecommunications companies and financial institutions which often attempts to develop e-payment systems as a standalone service. "The growing increase in the use of the Internet and mobile phone services on one hand, and the increasingly penetration of near-field technology on the other hand are vital factors that push toward building a unified and integrated e-payment system that will contribute to reducing the time and effort needed to perform financial transactions, pay for products and services, settle civil liabilities owed to the government, or pay water, electricity, communications and other bills," Tuffaha said.

Okay to give you a little bit more background about their concept. So if you’re familiar with the idea of Big Data, a Big Data is a trend that’s floating around the IT world these days that you’re probably familiar with. And so you’re probably familiar with the concept of Big Data as data volume, so a large number or a large volume size in terms of data. And you’re probably also familiar with data velocity and particularly the concept of data being near real time, so we want real time information.

Outside of Joe Frazier’s Gym in north Philadelphia, the sidewalk is
littered with an empty handle of Gordon’s gin, a yellow flash of caution
tape and scattered pebbles of broken glass.
More than a year after Frazier’s 2011 death, preservation advocates are seeking protective designations for the building in a campaign that is a sign of a larger cultural shift in the historic preservation community. At the movement’s heart is a push for inclusiveness in a field that has long privileged the stories and accomplishments of influential white men and paid little if any attention to anyone else.
“We’ve done an analysis over the past year,” said Stephanie Toothman, the National Park Service’s associate director for cultural resources. “The percentage of sites that specifically represent women and groups such as African-Americans, Native Americans and Asian-Pacific Americans ranges from 3 to 8 percent.”
Compared with the makeup of the U.S. population, that percentage is minuscule. Women make up slightly more than 50 percent of the population in the United States, and white men account for about 36 percent of the overall population, according the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau.
“They often say that history is written by the winners, but it’s also narrated by the people who have the podium,” said Page Harrington, executive director of Sewall-Belmont House and Museum, the Washington, D.C., headquarters for the National Woman’s Party throughout much of the 20th century. “So if you have fewer women in leadership positions — in universities, or writing textbooks, or in Congress — you have fewer of those stories that are necessarily making their way into the public spectrum that the next generation of scholars looks at, and so on, and so on.”
The fight to save Frazier’s gym seems appropriately symbolic for a man who fought his way to the top. Frazier was an underdog before he became a champ. He worked in a Philadelphia slaughterhouse, where he practiced throwing punches on slabs of beef hanging in a freezing meat locker. Sylvester Stallone borrowed that training habit for a montage in the boxing film “Rocky.” And while Philadelphia erected a statute of Stallone’s fictional boxer, the fate of Frazier’s gym is uncertain.
Her photograph, "The Grape Escape," features tiny men picking a life-size grape and hoisting it onto a miniature pickup figurine. Then there's "Family Fun," which depicts a tiny figurine riding a giant bottle rocket as a crowd cheers.
"I just can't stop looking at them, I've never seen anything like it," said 32-year-old Rex Irving of Orlando, looking at another one of Honeycutt's collection on Saturday where miniature figures are standing atop a donut brushing on the glaze.
Irving was one of an expected 250,000 expected to come to the city's downtown today for the two-day Mount Dora Arts Festival.
Beth Miller, executive co-chair for the Mount Dora Center for the Arts, said it's not a surprise that such a picturesque city would attract large crowds.

Avalon Breads Rises To New Heights
Ann Perrault, co-owner and CEO of Avalon International Breads, never
dreamed she would turn a dilapidated industrial building in Detroit into
a state-of-the-art bakery to be called Avalon City Ovens.
"Not in a million years," she said when talking about the first phase of her $2.2 million expansion project. The new 50,000-square-foot production facility is scheduled to open this month at 6555 East Forrest. "But if you think about it and think about the resources in Detroit, and the large vacant buildings, it does make sense that this is the direction we took."
The warehouse was purchased at the 2010 Wayne County Tax Foreclosure Auction and is funded by a loan that closed in early October. "I never would have thought of doing this. It was an exciting process to actually go and do it," said Perrault, adding that a few of her customers turned her on to the idea. "I am getting the space for a lot less than what it's worth because the owner hasn't paid the taxes. That's kind of a hard situation. I got really lucky."
Avalon now employs more than 50 people. Perrault is in the process of hiring 100 additional bakers, drivers, sales and customer service workers to continue Avalon's growth in the heart of the city.
According to a recent press release, the project comes not long after Avalon opened its second retail location last summer known as the Eat Well, Do Good Cafe in the West Grand Boulevard building of Henry Ford Hospital. "The quick success of this store and growing demand for Avalon products in suburban Detroit and Ann Arbor prompted the expansion," she said.
"The Michigan Economic Development Corporation under Mike Finney wanted to jump start economic growth and support businesses dedicated to employing people, particularly from urban communities," said Don Snider, senior vice president, Urban Economic Development for MEDC. "Avalon is a great example of how our collaborative resources with local partners can lead to growth that benefits all of metropolitan Detroit."
The project involves a complicated partnership with Invest Detroit, Whole Foods, the Small Business Administration and Main Street Bank. "I asked them to be a part of the business in 2008. It was formally done in 2010. It came with a lot of negotiations around how that was going to happen. This was a good way to secure the wholesale end of the business," she said.
The new location will service the artisan bakery's growing wholesale and retail customers. Avalon breads can be purchased at grocery stores like Whole Foods, Holiday, and Plum markets. Restaurants that offer Avalon products are Small Plates in Detroit, Frittata in Clawson, Bastone in Royal Oak, and the Jolly Pumpkin in Ann Arbor, to name a few.
The original 2,000-square-foot production and retail flagship store was established in 1997 by Perrault with her partner, Jackie Victor. Located at 422 W. Willis in the Cass Corridor, Avalon became the biggest organic bread flour purchaser in Michigan, purchasing over 9,000 pounds of organic,A ridiculously low price on this All-Purpose solar lantern by Gordon. milled grains weekly from hard-working, organic wheat farmers.
Many aspiring entrepreneurs seek advice and guidance from Perrault as a result of her success. She is not one of those people who keeps her experience a secret. She shares everything, she is one of her word, she is knowledgeable, and the bakery thrives the way it does because of Ann. I name drop her anytime I'm trying to get a new account or close on a deal. Her name is golden."

FC Barcelona were forced to settle for a draw in the opening leg of

Clearly, Jose Mourinho was keen to take the game to the visitors right from the opening whistle, and as soon as Barcelona got their foot on the ball, they were instantly swarmed by a number of white shirts. Naturally, there were a couple of late tackles thrown in for good measure; but this was nothing new. The Blaugrana are used to a little rough-and-tumble and they tend to start slowly away from home; would they be able to survive the early Madrid pressure?
In short, yes. It may have taken 10 or so minutes, but Barcelona eventually settled into their groove and began to chip away at a resolute Real Madrid defense. There was still a free-kick to contend with; but the Bernabeu crowd breathed a collective sigh of relief as Xavi’s effort rattled off the frame of Diego Lopez’ goal. Xavi then went closer still with a shot assisted by Cesc Fabregas, who pounced on a mistake from Carvalho, but Raphael Varane spared his teammate’s blushes with an exceptional goal-line clearance.

As per usual, Ronaldo’s free-kick was struck with power, and Pinto had to be at his very best to judge the flight of the ball and make the save.
Clearly, Jose Mourinho was keen to take the game to the visitors right from the opening whistle, and as soon as Barcelona got their foot on the ball, they were instantly swarmed by a number of white shirts. Naturally, there were a couple of late tackles thrown in for good measure; but this was nothing new. The Blaugrana are used to a little rough-and-tumble and they tend to start slowly away from home; would they be able to survive the early Madrid pressure?

There was still a free-kick to contend with; but the Bernabeu crowd breathed a collective sigh of relief as Xavi’s effort rattled off the frame of Diego Lopez’ goal. Xavi then went closer still with a shot assisted by Cesc Fabregas, who pounced on a mistake from Carvalho, but Raphael Varane spared his teammate’s blushes with an exceptional goal-line clearance.

Mexicans don't necessarily have it the worst when crossing illegally
into the United States. Ecuadorans and Salvadorans, who also immigrate
here in large (and rising) numbers, tend to face a much longer land
journey -- they have to pass through all of Mexico to get here. The
ocean crossing from Cuba to Key West, a mere 100 miles, may be the most
dangerous of all, especially if you set out at night on a homemade raft,
as many migrants used to do.
But Mexicans, even those traveling safely and legally between the two countries, carry history with them when they cross the border. Like many national borders, the initial line drawn between the two countries was in a sense highly arbitrary. Through the end of the 19th century -- that is, even after the Mexican-American war -- native populations that inhabited what is now the border region roamed without restrictions the area between the American Southwest and Northern Mexico. Because of the process of mestizaje, many Mexicans could trace part of their heritage back to one of these cultural groups.
During the conquest, the Spanish settled deep in North America. Before the Mexican-American War in 1848, Mexico's claims on the West Coast stretched all the way up to modern-day Oregon. As settlers from the eastern United States began to move west, the disputed slice of the future state of Texas started to become a problem. As part of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, which ended hostilities and established a friendly relationship between the two nations, Mexico ceded a vast swath of territory, from today's California to today's Texas. In the west, the geological boundary between the two countries is less clear.
For some people living between the two cultures, the border is a fracture that has never healed. The treaty, wrote the Chicana activist Gloria Anzaldúa, "left 100,000 Mexican citizens on this [the U.S.] side, annexed by conquest along with the land." They became the first Mexican Americans. It was not, and is not, a comfortable position to be in, Anzaldúa writes.
The war delineated our current border. But beginning in 1850 -- that is, almost immediately after the war -- Mexicans began to replace immigrant Chinese and Japanese as cheap manual labor, especially on Midwestern and Western farms. While they crossed the border to work without any particular authorization, it didn't really matter. The concept of an "illegal alien" didn't yet exist. Their immigration without papers hadn't been criminalized, and many agricultural workers returned to Mexico at the end of each picking season.
Not until 1924, when the Border Patrol was founded, did it become illegal for Mexicans to cross the border without permission from the U.S. government. The government first began policing the border, in fact, after a general nativist backlash against immigrants provoked by World War I. Cyprien Gaillard's "Crystal Worlds" at MoMA PS1 Trace the Fragility of Empire
In “The Crystal World,” his first solo museum exhibition in New York
(which runs through March 18), Gaillard creates powerful and mesmerizing
portraits of suffering cities, meditations on transformation and decay
that are also simply enjoyable to look at. Although the 80 works on view
here comprise a variety of media, video art is the centerpiece. The
show is anchored by the film “Artefacts” (2011), which has the largest
exhibition room to itself. In these images from Baghdad during the U.S.
occupation, soldiers in fatigues hold out fragments of ancient tablets
and other archaeological finds, men in traditional dress trek across the
desert, and, in one intensely enjoyable and intriguing segment,
swirling bands of solid color fill up the screen. These bands suggest
the mad movements of carnival rides, but we’re told that they’re the
spinning skirts of a whirling dervish. The film captivates and draws you
in, kind of like a travelogue — over the weekend, there were even some
young children sitting on the floor watching it with their parents.

The music is a continuous loop of a sample from David Gray’s song “Babylon,” which, as the wall text points out, is said to have been used as part of the torture of detainees at Abu Ghraib. Here, though, the repetition is haunting without being torturous, and there’s an added layer of meaning; located about 50 miles south of Baghdad, the ancient kingdom of Babylon, with its fabled hanging gardens, is itself a symbol of loss and the passage of time. Technologically the work is also composed of layers — Gaillard filmed the video on his iPhone and then transferred it to 35-millimeter film, which you can hear whirring through the projector while watching the shaky, handheld images.
The show is rich in connections between works. One small room holds seven huge excavator bucket teeth in seven glass cases, recalling the display of Babylonian antiquities at Berlin’s Pergamon Museum that were viewed in “Artefacts.” I found myself examining them from all angles, as if they were worn antique statues, when of course they signify something very different — their natural erosion occurs from digging into earth to put up new construction.
In his long series of three-by-three grids of Polaroid photos, “Geographical Analogies,” Gaillard also plays with notions of tourism and the past. Each grid is focused on one locale; I recognized Baghdad from seeing one of the structures that appeared in “Artefacts.” But most of these cities could be anywhere — a certain kind of anywhere, that is.We've got a plastic card to suit you. Images of foreclosed houses made me think of Detroit (though they may be in Passaic, New Jersey, one location that Gaillard used), and others look like the outdated, monolithic structures of many third-world cities. Individually, with their slightly orangey hue and their odd angles, these snapshots could be photos that any tourist has taken. The way they’re arranged in grids, though, is somehow very elegant and poignant. Now Sydney, Melbourne and Perth have his works hung in their art galleries, and we too in Bombala and surrounds have our share of his wonderful pieces.
It is a selection of these which will be exhibited at ‘Visions of the Monaro’, and this will of course be a very rare treat for art lovers in the region.
All the more so when the show and sale will also offer a range of works from our own local artists, which will add another dimension to the event, and allow some to take home very special purchases.

Ugliness in Ohio

wrote me an email yesterday that, I think, perfectly captures the awful
situation this country is in, waiting for this ridiculous state to tell
us what our future will be.

I spent Halloween week as drunk as a human costumed as a cowboy and living off borrowed money can be. It was New Orleans. But it’s really insane not to be in Ohio right now–by rights everyone in the country ought to have some way to be here,You'll be able to spot your bag from a mile away with these elegant and colorful leather luggage tag. just to see the place where this thing’s going to be decided and hear the ridiculous babble and the murmurs of machinations on both sides and to understand firsthand just how small and frantic the final portion of this process has really turned out to be. Everyone watching is tired and confused and has lost all perspective from looking too long. I remember during the last World Cup, an announcer in one of the late games calling a string of passes and then remarking, with no context and without any apparent prompting, “You know, we’re all going slowly mad here.” This is the feeling in Ohio the day before a presidential election.
Obama spoke last night at an arena on the campus of the University of Cincinnati. I called Jason, his beleaguered press guy in Southwest Ohio, who said I could get in if I made it by seven, when they’d shut down the press entrance. I left New Orleans at eight in the morning and between Slidell and Birmingham I averaged 105 on the speedometer. I lost an hour crossing into Eastern time in Kentucky, and I made it to Cincinnati at 6:48 P.M. I parked and ran at 6:55. I found a cop who said I was too late but that I could try the Secret Service, and I found a Secret Service agent who at 6:59 said that I was too late and that he’d shut everything down five minutes ago. I protested. “Seven o’clock,” he said. “It’s seven now!” I said. “So you’re late,” he said. “But we’ve been talking for thirty seconds. Probably forty-five.” I said. “Do you have your credentials?” I said I’d left them in New Orleans. He said that he would take me to Jason, but that if Jason didn’t immediately recognize me “I’ll take you by the arm and escort you off this campus.A new Lamp shade is a quick and easy way to bring a fresh look to your home.”
We went in. Jason gave me a look that said he had more important things to be dealing with right then. “James, man,” he said. “You really...Man, James. I can’t keep doing this for you.” The agent left me. It turned out that Jason had for a while thought that I wrote for Vibe magazine.
Stevie Wonder was playing. Jason told me that the fire department count was 13,500 people in the arena and another 2,000 watching a video stream in an overflow tent. Mark Mallory, Cincinnati’s mayor, spoke and spoke shockingly well for a mayor speaking to 13,500 people. “We all know this election comes down to Ohio.Chances are, you've never setup a real time Location system.” Cheers. “And within Ohio this election comes down to Hamilton County.” Cheers. “And within Hamilton County this election comes down to Cincinnati.” Louder cheers. And within Cincinnati this election comes down to this room.” The arena exploded. The atmosphere was exactly that of a home crowd of a favored team, game seven of the World Series. I was leaning on a railing separating the crowd from the press corral, and behind me I heard a girl, obviously a U.C. student, ask “wait, who is this talking anyway?”
The black minister who gave the invocation called out "God! You who have ordained this man's steps," and thanked him for peace and prosperity. Obama came on. A bald white man immediately began shouting from the balcony of the arena. It's hard to articulate the hurt and the rage in the crowd. People shouted grotesquely. It was about half college students. Almost all the adults were black. Obama smiled and waved. He spoke again. The man started yelling again. Sherriff's deputies came to remove him. He hung onto the guardrail of the balcony, he kicked at them, and screamed and twisted his face. The crowd cheered while this was going on. It was ugly. I was worried he'd jump. It took three deputies to get him off the rail. Obama started again. Then a thick white guy in a baseball cap yelled from another balcony. It looked like the thing was going to go off the rails. The crowd began shouting some things that a talk radio host might consider racially inflammatory. He was taken out by one deputy. The crowd thundered...Obama spoke.

Currency of information loses its value
Some, maybe even most, vice-chancellors are reluctantly coming to the
view that the only way out is to charge students higher fees because
everyone knows that the government can't, or won't, pay any more.
But there is now solid evidence from the US that raising fees merely delays the agony. Eventually a point is reached where students realise there is insufficient return on their investment to bother with university.
This issue of cost has become even more urgent since the advent of massive open online courses. They
demonstrate that universities of the future will not be able to make a living from imparting information because they are no longer the only or even the best aggregators of information. That role was usurped by the internet years ago. The latest and highest quality information can now be found in cyberspace for free. Universities that persist in barricading their courseware behind pay walls and academics who fret about their intellectual property are destined for the scrap heap.
The new university business model will need to begin with the frank admission that information is too cheap to bother selling. Information may require money and hard work to generate, but almost as soon as something has been discovered, it's out there for all to Google. So if the currency of universities is no longer information, how are they supposed to make a living?
Universities of the future will have two basic products to sell: credentials and support services. A credential is a public validation that the student has mastered the topic under investigation and to obtain this, students will need to pay for assessment backed by a reputable institution. And because no two students are alike, there will be a service industry for mentors (formerly known as lecturers) capable of navigating individual students through cyberspace.
Much of this can be achieved through automated programmed instruction but some students, mainly school-leavers, will want to interact face to face with tutors and friends.A smooth and Glossy floor tile not only looks bright and clean, As a result, there will continue to be a market of indeterminate size for on-campus teaching in addition to the online format.
There is more than one potential business model in this new environment. Some universities will experiment with a form of cross-subsidisation. For example, Udacity is proposing to make employers pay to gain access to their graduates. Others will shift revenues to the future by making the initial experience free and charging for access later, such as the MOOC "taster" modules are doing. Or universities could try a variation of the rock-concert model whereby the music is downloadable for free but the live performances cost an arm and a leg.
Among the more promising approaches, however, is the so-called freemium model. It refers to a business model whereby the core product is given away for free and customers are charged for premium add-on features.Dongpeng professionally produces and export all types of glazed porcelain tile tiles at low price. For universities, this may mean giving away courseware and only charging students for the support services they want or need. The entry level premium product would be examinations leading to accreditation, but additional services could include moderated discussion groups, tutorial assistance and customised learning pathways.The Fridge fridge magnet is leader in the custom design, Because the cost burden of running a university is not in teaching but in research, freemium universities would need to find solutions to this challenge to avoid becoming mere diploma mills.

In February 2012, you expressed your doubts about his faith on national television, partly because he had tried to engage Muslim nations and leaders in a dialogue about the world's future. North Carolina evangelicals and prophetic ministers, steeped in the African American church, asked you to cease arousing unwarranted suspicion about the President's faith. At that time a group of Christian clergy and scholars from North Carolina wrote to you in private as the scriptures first demands. Among many things in our pastoral and prophetic critique we said to you, March 5, 2012:
"...It seems to us that your apology is helpful and yet narrow and almost grudging. And we feel a reluctant confidence that you and many other Evangelicals will continue to disparage President Obama and the faith of other Christians through a critique that pushes him and many of us outside the fundamental tenets of the Christian faith.

You were apparently unmoved by our criticism. Last week, as the CEO of the non-profit, tax-exempt Billy Graham Evangelical Association, you used the Association's funds to buy expensive full page ads in major newspapers in North Carolina and other parts of the country to further arouse unwarranted suspicion about the President's personal faith. The paid advertisement contained transparent insinuations about "support for the nation of Israel", the "sanctity of life" and the "biblical definition of marriage," with a photo of your father and his signature. Your ad implied he wrote the text of what was a clear endorsement of the President's opponent because he was more of a Christian than the President. The political endorsement was particularly ironic, since the non-profit you preside over has, until a couple of weeks ago, questioned whether Mormonism is part of the Christian faith.
We are intrigued by the challenge of Dr. William C. Martin, of Rice University, who wrote a glowing biography about your father called "A Prophet with Honor: The Billy Graham Story" when he saw copies of the ad you authorized over your Association's name. Dr. Martin said that your father, "after realizing that he'd been cynically manipulated by Richard Nixon, . . . resisted joining the Religious Right... he [Billy Graham] warned religious leaders 'to be wary of exercising political influence' lest they lose their spiritual impact.Everyone needs a USB flash drives wholesale these days." Dr. Martin suggested that you "steered" your father to make this statement, since Billy Graham's interest in homosexuality was "never central" to his ministry. In February 2012, you expressed your doubts about his faith on national television, partly because he had tried to engage Muslim nations and leaders in a dialogue about the world's future. North Carolina evangelicals and prophetic ministers, steeped in the African American church, asked you to cease arousing unwarranted suspicion about the President's faith. At that time a group of Christian clergy and scholars from North Carolina wrote to you in private as the scriptures first demands. Among many things in our pastoral and prophetic critique we said to you, March 5, 2012:

And we feel a reluctant confidence that you and many other Evangelicals will continue to disparage President Obama and the faith of other Christians through a critique that pushes him and many of us outside the fundamental tenets of the Christian faith.

President Obama's faith was formed in a prophetic Christian tradition that certainly resonates with our own traditions, experiences and Scriptural readings. In Dreams from My Father, he writes of the first stirrings of his Christian faith: "...at the foot of that cross... I imagined the stories of ordinary black people merging with the stories of David and Goliath, Moses and Pharoah, the Christians in the lion's den, Ezekiel's field of dry bones.
