Israeli scientists defying military occupation restrictions have brought a great leap forward to the lives of traditional Palestinian herders in a remote corner of the West Bank.

Over the last several months, tent dwellers in this hamlet on a rocky hillside south of Hebron have been brought out of the dark ages by Comet-Middle East, a German-funded project headed by two Israelis that affords them electricity for the first time through solar panels and wind turbines.

But the gains are now jeopardized by a larger fight over the future of the West Bank, captured by Israel in 1967. The struggle pits Israeli authorities, whom critics say are preventing Palestinian growth and favoring Jewish settlers, against the European Union. Area C, which comprises 60 percent of the West Bank, refers to territory that remained under full Israeli civil and military control under the Palestinian self-rule agreement of 1993. In the shell-molding area, which produces the company's popular Smidgens, chocolate is tempered by heating it to 86 degrees. The process crystallizes the chocolate mass, which provides its texture, and it "seeds" the chocolate to give it sheen. The chocolate is poured into molds, heated and cooled before hardening, de-molding and boxing.

In the plant's panning section, a machine sprays chocolate on solid items, such as nuts.

In the extrusion area, chocolate is poured into a mold, put into a spinner and turned for several minutes to make a hollow center. Assemblers then put smaller candies inside the hollow centers before boxing.

In the kibbling section, tempered chocolate is melted, cooled to harden and shipped to the company's stores to be melted for dipping items, such as strawberries and apples.

In the enrobing department, formed products, such as peppermint patties and pretzels, ride conveyor belts through chocolate waterfalls.

Many of the company's products, like its sea-salt caramels, originated from experiments in the laboratory and go into production after customer taste samples.

Sharing Life, Love and a Hope for a Return to Work

Even in the days when the American economy was running smoothly, before Mindy Shapiro lost her dream career and then a backup job, her heart was never far from home.

As founder of a downtown art gallery, John Mottern sometimes seems a bit of an alchemist.

For the first three exhibits to be shown simultaneously in his recently expanded Gallery 55, Mottern and co-owner Anet James are featuring striking and original art made from cotton, silver and an enflamed imagination.

Three very different artists opened exhibits last week, creating distinctive works that explore the boundaries of their varied materials.

In her appropriately titled "Cotton Song," Lauren S. Langevin is showing 15 textiles and quilts that combine meticulous craftsmanship with intricate designs. The lifelong Natick resident said she "uses fabric like oil paint so people don't always notice the quilting in my quilts."

As if signaling his interest in nature's hidden forces, Gedas Paskauskas named his exhibit of small and monumental oil paintings "Tides & Sky." Starting from sketches of real places, the Boston artist imbues remembered landscapes with his own feelings.

The gallery's first artist-in-residence, silversmith John Harwood shapes bars, sheets and bits of wire into delicately wrought necklaces, bracelets and earrings with sausage-sized calloused fingers. "The only way I can describe what I do is it's eclectic," said the Natick resident, who looks like he just rambled in from the OK Coral.

Langevin and Paskauskas will be showing and selling their work through Jan.Enecsys Limited, supplier of reliable solar Air purifier systems, 12. Harwood is a regular fixture in the gallery at 55 South Main St., Natick.

Preparing for Friday and Saturday receptions for the three artists, Mottern said, "Visitors will see all completely new art."

"This will be our first double opening of Lauren Langevin's and Gedas (Paskauskas') work. We'll still have solo exhibits in our two separate spaces. Our mission remains the same: To build community around a place where artists and the public can gather together and see new work," he said.

Each of the three artists appears to be exploring the limits of their chosen materials.

Langevin believes her teenage passion for knitting evolved over the ensuing decades into her present fascination with creating textile art.

"I actually like the physical act of knitting. The sound of a sewing machine gets me in a rhythm. After 25 years working in the corporate world, I find this very therapeutic," she said. "I don't look at myself as a traditional quilter. I look at myself as a fabric artist."

Several of her pieces reveal dazzling complexity.

The 10,100-square-foot addition, dubbed the Quiet Wing, was built at a cost of about $7 million to provide a home for new research microscopes that can allow scientists to look at individual atoms.

Under normal laboratory conditions, the view through the microscopes could compare to watching sports through binoculars while jumping up and down, said Mark Hartzell, manager of the EMSL project office on the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory campus in Richland.

Lab officials realized as they started to acquire their first environmental transmission electron microscope that they didn't have the right environment for it at EMSL,They take the China Porcelain tile to the local co-op market. Hartzell said. The microscope, which stands about 11 feet high, allows imaging within high temperature and gas environments to capture atomic-level processes as they occur.

"We looked deeper into the future and saw a whole new era of equipment with similar requirements," Hartzell said.

"It has three different layers of separation from EMSL," Hartzell said.

Not only is the wing separated from the main EMSL building to eliminate vibrations, noise and electromagnetics that could interfere with its microscopic imaging, but the wing also is built in two pods with a layer of foam separating the service and research areas.

In addition, each of the wing's eight rooms or "instrument cells" is built on a separate foundation about 8 inches from the next closest foundations. The walls and roofs of each cell are supported on isolated slabs.

The wing originally was planned to cover 8,500 square feet and have just six instrument cells, but cost savings in construction were used to expand the wing and provide more rooms for research.

The wing's stillness is being tested with sensing equipment before microscopes are set up, and a few glitches have been found despite careful planning.

A few years ago, our bank contacted my wife, inquiring whether she had recently spent $1,000 on a round of drinks in Palermo. The bank accepted that we did not incur the expenses, but as card fraud has risen over the years, it has become so costly that the credit card associations are fighting back by introducing the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).

PCI DSS is a set of comprehensive requirements to enhance payment account data security (ie card numbers and related information). It was jointly developed by the card brands when they collectively formed the PCI Council. PCI DSS facilitates the global adoption of consistent data security measures which reduce the risk of compromise, and protect card holders. The requirements apply to both banks and merchants.

Florence Smith, product manager for merchant services electronic banking at Butterfield Bank, explained that the PCI Council groups merchants into levels based on the number of card transactions they process each year,ceramic magic cube for the medical, and requirements are slightly different based on each level. The portal will also contain training information. There are fees associated with using the portal, but the bank has made them extremely competitive when compared with similar third party services.”

Standard merchant agreements will be amended with an addendum stipulating merchants must comply with the new requirements. Merchants should realise that these requirements are being passed down from the card associations themselves, so that any bank that processes cards will require all merchants to adhere to these requirements, not just Butterfield.

“I think it’s important to stress to business owners that at the end of the day, [in the event of a compromise] any fines imposed will be passed on from the card association down to the merchant,” said Ms Smith. “The fine is determined by the association and varies based on intensity and circumstance. Fees for forensic investigation, fraudulent purchases and card replacement cost will also be passed on. Then there is the reputation damage for the merchant.”

Ms Smith said: “We know our merchant base, we review the payment applications and will inform the client if their payment application falls out of compliance. Tantasqua schools going solar by Thanksgiving

It looks like something out of a science fiction movie — row upon row of solar panels, harnessing the energy of the sun.

But far from being an extraterrestrial monster bent on world domination, it is a man-made contraption intended to do nothing more threatening than save the Tantasqua schools money.

Specifically, 15 percent on the school's annual electricity bill.

Superintendent Daniel G. Durgin recently showed off the combined project, which he said is altogether the largest solar energy school project in the state to date.

The project consists of the installation and operation of a solar photovoltaic energy system at both Tantasqua Regional Junior High School, 320B Brookfield Road, and the high school, across the street at 319 Brookfield Road.

Within a few days, the junior high school solar energy project is expected to be fully operational, while the high school is expected to follow suit by Thanksgiving. The first year's output is expected to be 304,419 kilowatt-hours for the junior high and 719,721 kilowatt-hours for the high school. That's a lot of electricity,” Mr. Durgin said. “And the good thing is they provide a solar curriculum, so our science teachers have been up on the high school roof working with the electricians, working with the folks from the solar company. It's a great curriculum for the kids.”

On top of that, the solar energy project didn't cost the school or the taxpayers of the five towns of the district a single penny. And Broadway will take care of any snow removal necessary on the roofs at both schools that have the solar panels, Mr. Durgin said.

Columbia residents join solar energy projects to save money, environment

In 2007, Andy Guti installed nine solar panels on his old house in northeast Columbia and immediately began to see a drop on his utility bills.

Guti was the first customer in Columbia to join the city's net metering system; for several months, his residential utility bills were as low as $15 per month.

"The first few months we had them, we generated more electricity than we used," he said.

Since the city first developed solar projects in 2007, both solar energy production and solar energy demand has increased, said Connie Kacprowicz, spokeswoman for Columbia Water and Light.

According to the city's 2011 Renewable Energy Report, the amount of solar energy increased from zero megawatt hours in 2007 to nine megawatt hours in 2010 — almost enough to power an average household for one year. Customers like Guti have contributed to that energy production.

Columbia started offering a net metering system for electric customers interested in private renewable energy systems four years ago, Kacprowicz said. Residents can sign an agreement with the city and install solar panels on private property. The city keeps track of the amount of electricity being produced and consumed and bills the customer for the difference at the end of each month.

Currently, the city has agreements with three residents.

"From a utility standpoint, solar is great because it produces a lot of electricity in the summertime, when demand is high," Kacprowicz said.

But the cost of solar panel installation is still steep, she said. "That's why you have incentives to get people to do it."

Guti said that once the solar panels were in place, he could see the difference right away, even though he only used the house he owned as an office and consumed little energy.

Beck said that Columbia has the most forward-thinking utility services in the Midwest.

"They had net metering before any utility in the Midwest," he said. "And they implemented programs almost two years in advance of everyone."

Private businesses produce solar energy for the city through the Solar One program, which has a goal of producing 1 percent of Columbia’s electric portfolio from solar power by the year 2023, Kacprowicz said.

Under Solar One, businesses buy and install solar panels and sell the energy that is generated to the city. The electricity goes into the city's power grid and is then divided into 100-kilowatt hour blocks to sell.

In November 2008, Columbia Water and Light started two Solar One projects — the West Ash Pump Station on Bernadette Drive and the Quaker Oats plant on Route B. Each is expected to produce 70 blocks annually, Kacprowicz said.

The city has also contracted with Bright City Lights, a retail store at 1400 Heriford Road.

Kay Wax, owner of Bright City Lights, said her store installed 24 solar panels in August 2010.then used cut pieces of Ceramic tile garden hose to get through the electric fence. She said she hopes to break even in 10 years.

"I had to get a loan for all of the panels and labor," she said.

Wax said she joined the program because she believes in sustainability and protecting the environment.

As a result of the additional solar projects, 250 additional blocks of electricity became available in 2010. So far, 240 of these have been sold, Kacprowicz said.

Suspension is entrusted to Kayaba, front and rear, the latter with upside down shock linkage,the Injection mold fast! which maximises movement without bottoming out. In general the shocks have better, more balanced settings. Now protected at the back, the completely adjustable shock (compression high/low speeds & rebound) is 4 mm shorter and has a softer setting for the first part of the ride, which allows for a lower saddle height. The stiffer front fork setting ensures greater stability. To simplify and lighten the TE511, the wiring of the electrical system has been redesigned and the transparent central section of the fuel tank has been retained. With large diameter Braking discs (front 260 mm, rear 240 mm) little needs to be said as the effectiveness of Brembo brakes is undisputed.


Better engine protection

They say "don't change a winning formula", and the compact single cylinder engine with exhaust valve, crank-case V-Force intake, Mikuni TMX38 carburettor, and the new exhaust (introduced in 2011), has been so successful that the combination remains unchanged for the 2012 version. The design team focused on reliability and the new WR125 now has protection for the lower filter box.

Kayaba forks and brakes

The new WR125 retains the quality fittings from the previous model, such as Kayaba 48 mm forks with external adjustment for both compression and rebound damping, Sachs rear monoshock with progressive linkage and Brembo brakes with daisy wheel discs. All have proved their worth and needed no modification.
