Home and Garden Show takes over ice center

For one weekend, gardening and home improvement replaced hockey and ice skating at the George S. Eccles Ice Center.

A floor made of interlocking rubber mats covered the surface of the ice, and more than 90 vendors set up booths for the Cache Valley Media Group 2012 Home and Garden Show on March 23-24.

Carl Yeip, a sales representative for the Kaysville-based food storage company Daily Bread, said he thought the ice center was a good venue for the event.Wireless Indoor Positioning System have become very popular in the system.

Yeip, a sophomore studying geology at USU, said he works for Daily Bread to help pay for college.

Greg Roper, general sales manager at Cache Valley Media Group and the event's coordinator, said for the past seven or eight years the event was held in the Nelson Fieldhouse. This year event planners chose the ice center because of its location and parking.

“The biggest advantage and the whole reason we moved it from USU — USU has been good and the facility was great,” Roper said. “I don't have anything bad to say about Utah State University at all — it's just the location and the parking. “The biggest concern was how cold is it going to be,” Roper said. “Yeah, it's a little chilly, but it's not horrible. People that come in and go through the show, they enjoy it. They seem to be liking the energy that's here.”

Floyd Naegle, executive director for the ice center, said though the ice maintains a temperature of 20 F, the “sports court” covering helps keep air above it warmer.

“That floor almost acts like an insulator, so the (heat) doesn't hurt it,” Naegle said. “We turn it up about 6 or 8 degrees. It's pleasant. It's about 60 degrees, but if you get a bunch of bodies out there, it's more like 65.”

Roper said parking at the ice center is more simple than parking on campus.

“There have been no parking problems whatsoever,” he said. “When we were at the university, we were allowed only during their Spring Break, and they didn't change their parking regulations during that time period. So we had many many people who still got tickets, and (vendors) had to park a long ways away to get their stuff into the venue.”

Naegle said though the ice center had to cancel its usual skating activities, the garden show was an ideal event for the ice center to host. The ice center and Cache Valley Media Group have worked together often in the past, and the publicity generated by the garden show may help introduce new customers to the ice center, Naegle said.

“The amount of advertising they do on the radio, where every advertisement says, 'at the George S. Eccles Ice Center,' is invaluable,” Naegle said. “One of the things I've been chartered to do is get a new clientele in here … most people know the ice center is here, but many of them still have not come in and seen what a jewel of a facility this is.”

Cosmic occurrences won't really alter our well-being

Doctors Finally Call Off Strike, Unconditionally

Second man jailed for botched armed robbery

A second man has been jailed for a botched armed robbery where the raiders had to be rescued by the fire brigade after they had been locked in by an accomplice.

Ian Jordan (aged 33) was one of the men trapped inside the gold storage business with two staff members who had been bound and gagged during the raid.

His accomplice, Aidan Murphy (aged 32) of Stag Park Avenue, Mitchelstown, Cork was jailed for five years last year for his role in the raid.

Gary Byrne (aged 30) of Edenmore Crescent, Raheny was found guilty last week of taking part in the raid. Byrne fled in the middle of the attempted robbery, leaving his two accomplices locked in. He is to be sentenced next month.

Stray dog upsets birds at Montgomery Zoo

An unexpected, four-legged visitor created a brief fuss at the Montgomery Zoo on Saturday morning and set the birds all a-flutter in a self-defense alarm system.

The black dog that apparently had delivered a litter recently didn't bark, but the closer it got to the aviary, the louder the sounds from the blue and gold macaws flapping around inside their cage.

"They see the dog as a predator," said Ken Naugher, enrichment and conservation manager. "That's why they're making so much noise."

It took a few minutes, but Naugher and other personnel eventually got the dog under control and made sure it received attention outside the zoo.

Coaches fight against cancer

Coaches teach, nurture skills, shape minds, inspire and motivate. Wins and losses don't necessarily define their work, peaks and valleys do. Coaches mentor players through success, failure, pressures and challenges. It is how they overcome adversity and persevere that truly impacts futures.

Gavin Kane and Al Veneziano have been staples among Maine's basketball coaching fraternity for decades. Their programs have been among the best in the state during their tenures. But these two have far more in common than just basketball and coaching.

The skills they've utilized to motivate youth have been turned inward. The lessons they've taught and the dedication they've inspired now speaks back at them and has become their mantra.

Cancer is a cause they now share. Both have been living with it and battling against it, digging as deep within themselves as they've asked of their own athletes.

"My former high school coach, Jim Bessey, has called me on several occasions to see how I was doing," said Kane, who was a standout for Bessey at Mt. Blue. "He told me that he felt it was an advantage being an athlete and a competitor during times like this. He told me you have the mold of being a fighter and not wanting to lose a challenge. I do truly believe that my mindset as a competitor has helped me tremendously dealing with this.

"I have been one who could always push myself through difficult times, but I knew this would be my greatest challenge. It certainly has been an emotional roller coaster. I try not to dwell on the issue, which sometimes is hard not to do, especially when I understand that I'm in a higher percentage of people who could still have problems."

They've faced issues of life and death. They've contemplated leaving coaching. They've faced the challenges of life changing in an instant. Still, they live on, they dig deep and they coach.

"You have to be positive about it and work at fighting it," Veneziano said. "The people you work with at the cancer centers are very good. They're always very positive at what they do. You have to be positive about it to get through it and be willing to fight it."

On Friday, Kane and Veneziano will coach against each other again. Their teams have competed for regional championships in the past. Both squads are currently atop their respective classes. Yet, they'll be unified in celebrating life, death and raising the awareness of cancer's impact and the need to never give up.

It will be Coaches Vs. Cancer Night as Spruce Mountain hosts Madison at 7 p.m. The night will feature a remembrance wall and raffles to raise money for cancer research. All funds will go to the V Foundation, established in honor of the late North Carolina State basketball coach Jim Valvano.

"Personally, this night will mean so much to me," Kane said. "Cancer is a difficult battle, and not all people survive this disease. It affects so many people and families. I really just want to do something, even in a very small way, that will help towards cancer research. To do so with a friend of mine in Coach Veneziano, and others, will make for a very special evening."

Kane was living his dream as an assistant coach at the Division I level at the University of Maine. After coaching championship teams at Dirigo, both boys and girls, Kane had gotten the coveted chance to coach at the college level.

When the problems persisted, he was sent to a urologist.

He was told he had a tumor in his bladder. It had calcified over, which meant it had been there for awhile. Kane was scheduled for surgery immediately, while he had to await the result of a biopsy.

It was an agonizing two weeks, and when he returned to the urologist, he was told the tumor was the highest grade of cancer, and it was aggressive. Because it had been there for awhile, there was fear that it had likely spread.

That's when Kane had to discuss scenarios, from full removal of the bladder to death.

"I recall going out to the parking lot and getting into my car, and then just sitting there for about a half hour, thinking about what just hit me," Kane said. "My greatest fear was not my own issue, but that my kids might have to grow up without their dad. That is what really hit me hardest. I worried about how my wife would work and take care of three kids on her own."

After one surgery, he endured a seven-day driving recruiting jaunt to Baltimore and Atlanta.

"It wasn't easy working with how I was feeling, both emotionally and physically," Kane said. "But I not only was brought up to believe that you work for your pay, but I also wanted to stay engrossed in my work to limit some of the mental challenges of dealing with the unknown of what may or may not happen to me."

By late summer that year, Kane learned that the cancer had not spread. He had to wait for the bladder to heal from surgeries to remove the tumor. Though the treatments might not be as intense as chemotherapy, the side effects include feeling sick for days after the treatments. He had the treatments every three months and had to be scoped regularly to make sure the cancer hadn't returned.

"Unfortunately, because I have a fairly high rate of a possible recurrence, I may need to be scoped every three months for the remainder of my life," Kane said.

After leaving the University of Maine last year, he took the coaching job with the Spruce Mountain girls' team. Like the Phoenix he coaches, Kane is now rising above the challenge. Just before the season, he had a small round of treatments. It was the first time he'd gone six month between them.

"You have to look at small goals during a process like this" Kane said. "To know that I could go six months without being invaded other than being scoped, and to know I wouldn't feel ill for awhile, was one of those periods of time I was looking forward to."

Recently, he wasn't feeling well, which concerned him. Kane had an examination last week, and no signs of cancer were present. Any discomfort was chalked up to the trauma of the surgery and subsequent treatments. His next scope won't be until spring.MDC Mould specialized of Injection moulds,

"I believe that going through this situation has made me realize that some things are a lot less significant than I once thought they were," Kane said. "I'm a perfectionist and always need to do things immediately when they cropped up, regardless of how small they were. I have found myself worrying about fewer things that once may have bothered me. I take things with a grain of salt much more than I ever did in the past. "

Veneziano has been coaching basketball and softball at Madison for decades. He's won numerous titles in both sports.

In October of 2007, he noticed a change in how he felt.

"I just didn't feel good," Veneziano said. "I'd been going to the doctors for (routine check ups). I mentioned to him one day that I didn't feel good. I was tired. I just didn't feel like doing anything."

Veneziano had some testing done and learned that he had Follicular Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The diagnosis came just a month before the basketball season began. The Bulldogs had a number of returning players and promising expectations.

"I never expected to hear that," Veneziano said. "It kind of sets you back a little when you hear those words come out of a doctor's mouth."

Veneziano continued with rounds of tests and continued coaching. He tried to keep the diagnosis quiet at first, but when he had to miss a preseason game to have a biopsy, it was easier to make his challenge known.

The idea of stepping down as coach occurred to him, but his doctor encouraged him to stay on. He was told to not change anything and continue as normal, as long as he felt he could do it.

"It's a slow moving cancer," Veneziano said. "It's basically something you live with and do treatments for."

By the end of the season, the testing had confirmed the initial diagnosis and a proper treatment was determined. His cancer is a common lymphoma that attacks the lymph system. Different lymphomas require different treatments. So it took time to determine the right path to follow.

"By the time I went through all the tests and they were able to confirm what it was, it was the end of basketball season and tournament time," he said. "We waited until after the tournament to do treatments. So as soon as the state championship was over, we scheduled treatment the next week."

His treatment required a low dosage of chemotherapy. He started out with four sets of treatments every four weeks. Then the treatments began to lessen as he felt better.

"Now I'm going to the doctor every three or four months, depending on how I feel and how things are going," Veneziano said. "It's up to four months now. So I feel pretty good about it."

Since then, his Madison team has won two regional titles, in 2008 and 2010. He's also continued coaching softball. Lessening the number of treatments makes a difference when trying to coach two sports.

"When it was finished, you knew you had something happen," he said. "It didn't make your hair fall out or anything like that, but you knew something had happened to you when it was done."

Now Veneziano meets people all the time that have traveled a similar journey. He and Kane have talked regularly about the challenges they faced. While it has been a difficult time, it has also been filled by blessings.

"You learn how many friends you have and how many people are very good to you," Veneziano said. "You learn that right off quick. There are a lot of people that are very concerned about your well being."

He also learned how important the simplest of things can make a difference. He admits he was never one to think about sending out cards of encouragement or support.

"I now know how good it is to receive something like that, and how much you want someone to feel like you care about them," Veneziano said.

That's why a night focusing on cancer awareness struck a chord for both men. It is not just a way to raise money, but also an important opportunity to share stories, recognize the work of care givers, stress regular screening and early detection and remember those that didn't win their battle.

Kane received the idea of doing the event after watching college basketball. There was discussion about the V Foundation. Kane contacted Veneziano to see if he'd be interested in participating.

Kane's team is currently 8-0 and ranked second in Western Class B. Veneziano's Madison club is also 8-0 and ranked first in Western Class C. It could be a preview for a potential Mountain Valley Conference championship game.

While Friday is a significant basketball showdown for both teams, both coaches can attest that sometimes there are more important things than basketball.

Friday will be a showcase for two great teams and two coaches. For both Kane and Veneziano, it is not only a chance to give back but also a sign of moving forward.

"If I could pass any one thing on to others who are dealing with cancer, it would be to really try to focus on the other good things that are going on in your life," Kane said. "You have to give to others during your time of troubles, and it will help you through your difficult times. It sounds cliche, but you really have to take one day at a time and keep moving forward."

Out of my Beirut hotel window the jumble of history is everywhere. A ruined Ottoman fort and an exquisite Maronite chapel are immediately outside. Concrete blocks from the infamous Green Line which used to divide the city are scattered among fallen Roman columns. On the skyline, mosques and churches – there are around 18 official religions in Lebanon – frame the skeleton of the old Holiday Inn, a favourite target for anyone with a rocket launcher during the civil war which ended 11 years ago.

When friends knew I was going to Beirut, the reaction was split between those who see it as the most thrilling place to be right now – the Next Big Thing; and those who haven't got past seeing it as a war zone where well-meaning travellers end up chained to radiators. Both have a point. Style pundits are noisily buying up apartments and rightly singing the praises of Lebanese musicians and designers while Hizbollah and Israel's jets still fight it out around them. The Green Line is rapidly being built over in the shiny new Downtown district, and it's often hard to tell which is a shelled building and which is a construction site.

People I spoke to in Beirut are astonishingly matter of fact about Lebanon's recent past, telling stories of homes and lives destroyed; yet at the same time they are insistent that the world should look at Beirut not through the eyes of the American writer P J O'Rourke (it featured in his book, Holidays in Hell) but as a hopeful, optimistic and thriving place that is fast reinventing itself.

Solar thermal technology seen bolstering renewable energy adoption

The quest to develop an improved renewable energy storage system is intensifying, as researchers continue to make progress in their drive to spur the adoption of green technology.

One of the biggest hurdles facing the widespread adoption of solar panel and wind turbine systems is that they are still reliant on the whims of nature. Solar panel arrays are capable of generating a substantial amount of electricity when the sun is shining, but energy storage technology has not progressed as rapidly, confounding experts.

However, engineers are growing increasingly optimistic that solar thermal power could overcome the energy storage obstacles currently facing clean technology companies. The New York Times reports that researchers are betting the energy generation scheme, which harnesses the sun's heat to boil water and create electricity, can circumvent storage issues and potentially drive clean adoption throughout the U.S.

Scientists contend that the water used in solar thermal systems can be used to heat salt, which would effectively store energy for later usage. Such a system is optimal, according to experts, because it would supply energy to homes and businesses during the nighttime hours when the sun is no longer helping to drive energy generation.

More specifically, researchers and industry experts are hoping that solar thermal power plants could help meet electricity demand during peak demand hours, designated between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Renewable energy company SolarReserve is currently constructing such a power plant in the Nevada desert, and executives from the firm asserted it should be operational by next year.

Families come home to Franklin's Hard Bargain neighborhood

Angela Gentry grew up in Williamson County’s Hard Bargain neighborhood and longed to move back to raise her children.

Generations of families have called the four-block neighborhood that borders New Highway 96 West in Franklin home since the years after the Civil War.

The Hard Bargain neighborhood has 120 homes, four of which are new construction, with a fifth in progress and ground broken for No. 6.

Hard Bargain Mt. Hope Redevelopment has plans for many more generations of families to make their home in this area near downtown. The grass-roots nonprofit organization is dedicated to preserving the historic neighborhood through restoring existing homes, building new ones and providing beautification efforts to the neighborhood.

Gentry knew this is where she wanted to replant her roots.

“I grew up here my entire life,” she said of the neighborhood. We lived on Glass Street; my dad still lives here,” said the single mother of two sons, Isiah, 13, and Donovan, 10.

The neighborhood is home again.

“This is my first home,” Gentry said of the Craftsman-style house she bought in 2007. “I had wanted for so long to own a home, particularly here. I had rented elsewhere; homes are so expensive in Franklin that I seemed to have no opportunity to buy here. I thought I would either have to keep renting or move away from Franklin.”

“We were living in an apartment right around the corner from Hard Bargain. I drove by this house every day on my way to work and back. I had admired the house so much,” Gentry said. “Then one day I saw a picture of that house on Facebook and clicked on it, and learned about the Hard Bargain organization. I didn’t know a thing about it before that day. I read all about it and was determined to try to buy that house.”

That determination paid off. She went through a qualifying organization, GAP Community Development Resources, a HUD-certified home buyer education agency,Air purifier and was eventually able to buy this house she loved.

“We love the home, and it was coming home for me,” she said.

“I want to buy a rocking chair for our front porch. I grew up with my family sitting out on the porch here in Hard Bargain; I can’t wait to be able for us.

“I have no intention of ever leaving here.”

The land on which the Hard Bargain neighborhood was built was originally purchased after the Civil War by Harvey McLemore, a freed slave. Eight or nine years later, the land was subdivided and became home to other freed slaves.

“Historically Hard Bargain has been populated with freed slaves who were hard-working people,” said Brant Bousquet,high risk merchant account executive director of Hard Bargain Mt. Hope Redevelopment. “As they got their freedom and could earn money and had job opportunities, it became a middle-class neighborhood in the black community. The nonprofit organization, which he terms a “cousin” to Habitat for Humanity, provides affordable housing but differs from the Habitat model.

Bousquet says several factors make it possible to offer these new homes at below market value.

“Certainly David Crane is a huge part of this. He had helped rehab homes here before he began building the new ones. He does all this work at absolutely no profit to himself or his company,” he said.

Crane says it is he who is blessed by being able to do this work.

“It’s part of walking my Christian faith to give back to the Franklin community in which I have lived and worked for the last 25 years. Helping make all this possible are subcontractors who either donate or greatly discount their professional services, folks like the Lee Co. and Grassland Plumbing,” he said.

Other volunteers, including Mike Smith, a pastor who worked his way through college and seminary doing ceramic tile work, offer their time and talents to the effort.
'Silent second mortgage' helps

Qualified buyers are also given the benefit of what Bousquet terms a “silent second mortgage.”

“We sell the new homes for less than market value, providing a second mortgage. If the buyers stay in the homes for 20 years, that loan is forgiven. It is part of our efforts to keep the homes under the same ownership for years to come and to prevent buyers from flipping the houses,” Bousquet said. For example if a home appraises for $150,000, it would sell for $115,000 and the silent mortgage would be for $35,000.

Bousquet said generous contributions by donors are another key factor.

“We’re a small nonprofit organization, and we certainly depend on financial gifts to help us accomplish our mission,” he said. “Hard Bargain is a proud neighborhood, and we’re proud to help keep it that way. We don’t offer a handout, but rather a hand up.”

Inside the Projectionist's Booth

It's much more than flipping a switch. For Tom Letness, projectionist and owner of the Heights Theater on Central Avenue in Columbia Heights, film projection is a craft.

Every film Letness receives, he manually inspects "on the bench" -- the work table in the booth -- to make sure the film doesn't contain bad splices or damaged sprockets, and to ensure it has cue marks, those black dots that appear in the upper-right corner of a film frame to help projectionists start a new reel during reel-to-reel changeovers.

Letness then previews at least two reels of the film to make sure the aperture, focus and sound levels are properly set. "Time you spend checking the film saves a lot of grief during the presentation," he explains. "I believe that if people are going to come back on a regular basis, you have to have good presentation."

Inside the projection booth at the Heights are two Philips Norelco model AAII 35/70mm mechanical film projectors, both dating from the 1960s. "It's the greatest projector that was ever made, hands down," Letness says. "They are still running and they show a great image and I'm able to do so much with them."

Letness uses his Norelcos for many purposes: to screen new 35mm releases -- on this night, a print of Clint Eastwood's biopic J. Edgar is prepped and recumbent on an adjacent platter; to screen classic silent films and 1930s Hollywood fare; to project the Fifties' widescreen Cinemascope and Vista Vision films; and to show 70mm prints that became popular in the '60s and '70s and ended with 1997's megahit Titanic.

Having two projectors allows Letness to do reel-to-reel changes, a necessity for screenings of archival films, which are often from such sources as the Library of Congress, the UCLA Film and Television Archive and New York's Museum of Modern Art. Those archives enforce strict rules that prohibit projectionists from automating -- essentially, taping together -- film reels. "A lot of these classic films, it's the only print they have left," Letness explains.

Alongside the Norelco projectors, the cooling fans whirr on a DLP Cinema projector, which just completed a screening of The Nutcracker ballet. "I think for actual mainstream theaters, film will be gone forever," Letness says. "But for theaters like mine and other theaters that already specialize in film and archive screenings, film will continue."

Life in the fast lane

There’s hardly any other city in the State that can boast of such a rich history, heritage and royalty than Mysore. The City, in fact, finds itself on the list of the very few elite cities that have not lost their identity in the mad race over something called ‘progress’, a process that at times doesn’t integrate too well with a city’s people and their heritage. It isn’t bad news yet, but in 2011, Mysore accepted a few signs of a ‘modern’ city.

Whether one wants to interpret this change as another side of the otherwise complacent Mysorean, or as an inevitable and gradual pace at which the City gave itself into the hands of powers that be; change there is.

The traditional, religious and quiet Jayalakshmipuram, which was once known to host the premier studio, Central Institute of Indian Languages and ‘Basapppa aaspatre’ for those who came from nearby villages, today boasts of Mysore’s first shopping mall with a supermarket, DRC Cinemas, a multiplex with four screens (yes, there’s 3D too) and the quintessential KFC.

Mysoreans have welcomed it without much hassle, and DRC has integrated well into their weekends, sometimes even dominating their to-do list. That the locals own DRC is something that gives a lot of relief to the people of the City.

Brands flaunt themselves big time at the Mall of Mysore, which has given Devaraj Urs Road, which for years was known as the MG road of Mysore, a run for its money. As for visible infrastructure, Mysore’s ring road which was originally four lanes, has quickly made way to eight lanes. The city is literally on a fast lane now. Progress or peril? answers awaited.

The story is not very different for other cities and small towns in the State. Rewind to the Mangalore of the 1980s, for instance. St. Tammany Parish saves energy through use of solar panels

St. Tammany Parish has begun an experiment in solar power that already is generating savings. The parish recently installed solar panels on the roof of the pavilion at the Tammany Trace Trailhead at Koop Drive near Mandeville, as well as on the roof of the caretaker's cottage at Camp Salmen Nature Park near Slidell.
