When most people survive cancer, they just want to put the disease and its grueling treatment behind them. Not Deb Imada.

She's doing that by organizing the second annual Bumspiel for Colorectal Cancer to be held at the Royal City Curling Club on Saturday. The event is a fundraiser for the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada. But more importantly, Imada hopes it raises awareness about the disease and how to survive it.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in Canadian men and women combined. It's that last part that hangs most people up, says Imada, who lives in Surrey. It's not easy to talk about your backside, and "people are so fearful about getting a colonoscopy."

In fact, cancer was the furthest thing from Imada's mind when she went to her doctor to get checked out for a possible recurrence of the hemorrhoids that had plagued her after he son was born four years earlier. Her family had no history of colorectal cancer, she'd never had a problem with benign polyps, she was active and she was only 43 years old, seven years younger than the primary risk group.

But when her doctor said she felt a lump during her examination, Imada's world turned upside down.

Four months of tests, two surgeons and five days of radiation treatment later the tumour was removed.

"The waiting is the hardest part," says Imada. "The whole time I felt like a ticking time bomb."

But her battle didn't end there. Six months of chemotherapy stretched to eight. She suffered numerous side-effects including painful numbness in her fingers and the bottoms of her feet. She says there were days she was so physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted, she couldn't get out of bed.

Regular screenings to ensure she remained clear of cancer were emotionally agonizing.

"It's like the doctors say, 'we've cured you but the chances of recurrence are highest in the first two years,'" she says. Every colonoscopy or CT scan, she hoped and prayed for a clean report. She'll continue to be screened for the rest of her life. It's like a fellow patient once told her, "We're out of the woods, but we're not yet out of the forest."

During her battle with colorectal cancer, a colleague at work was also diagnosed with the disease and eventually died from it. That's when she made a promise to him, and to herself, to help spread the word about the disease and the importance of early detection through regular screening.

Health-care costs not justified by results: Fraser Institute

The Canadian health-care system has proven to be a black hole for federal tax dollars over the past decade or so, a report released Wednesday contends.

Despite hikes in federal transfers to provinces for health care that were $97.6 billion beyond what was needed to account for inflation and population growth in the last 13 years, there has been little improvement in access to care for Canadians,This page contains information about molds, says this Fraser Institute study.

"We find health-care systems that are performing better than Canada's that remain universal but do a much better job than Canada's health-care system at delivering on the promise of universal access to high-quality care in a time frame that provides peace of mind," he said.

The Fraser Institute's study did not specifically look at health-care outcomes, and Esmail acknowledged at least some of the increased funding seen in Canada in recent years has improved the quality of patients' health after treatment.

Mild winter means early allergy attack in Charlotte

There were plenty of reasons to love this year’s “winter that wasn’t.” But now it’s payback time for those with allergies.

“We’re about a month ahead of where we usually are,” says Dr. John Klimas with the Carolina Asthma and Allergy Center in Charlotte.

“We had about two days of winter,” he says with a laugh. “The tree pollen has been out since late January.” That’s not unusual for cedar, adds Klimas, but it is for oak, which is one of the main triggers of allergy woes in the Piedmont.

“We’re seeing people with more nasal allergies,” agreed Dr. David Peden, a Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine & Microbiology/Immunology at the UNC School of Medicine.

The weather from here on out can change things, but several experts say they expect the untimely effects to linger. “In past years, we’ve had a very compact, heavy-hitting allergy season, but this is shaping up to be a long slog,” says Gaithersburg, Md., allergist Jackie Eghrari-Sabet. While some species budded early, others will likely bloom at their regular pace, leading to “more of a slow, grand parade” throughout the spring, she says. “It’s not like because it started early it’s going to end early.”

He adds that it’s not too late to start taking them: They can make you feel better.

Some experts warn warmer winters may be the wave of the future.

“There have definitely been some data indicating that climate change is causing spring to advance and plants of all sorts to flower earlier,” says biologist Estelle Levetin, chair of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology’s aerobiology committee.

We’ll get tree pollen from the area as well as pollen from trees in West Virginia or potentially as far away as Virginia. People can use the air conditioner as opposed to opening up the windows and allowing allergens to come inside. In terms of hygiene, you can take a shower before you go to bed to wash out all of the allergens in your hair. You can also wash your face to get the remaining pollen off the eyelids and eyelashes."

At this point in the locavore narrative, urban chicken-keeping has vocal advocates and an adamant opposition. Some cities welcome backyard poultry with open arms, while others are more skeptical. As the practice grows, the two sides seem prepared for a long, drawn out war on the value and propriety of chicken-keeping within city limits.

Hargarten designed, sculpted and molded all the Sprecher tapper handles and has now made hundreds of them.

"They order every other week at least, if not every week," says Hargarten.

Hargarten started pouring his custom molds on top of the washer and dryer in his Milwaukee home 22 years ago. He went on to make prototypes for Danbury Mint – the "wildlife with fur stuff" as he puts it – as well as garden and lawn sculpture for Today's Design House.

"Garden art is less popular now," says Hargarten, in whose workshop crafted woodland creatures can still be spotted if one looks hard enough among all the beer tappers.

The laundry machines no longer serve as a flat working surface for Hargarten, who's worked out of his backyard shop in Cedarburg the last 16 years. Marietta school district explores solar power

Marietta City school board members say they are optimistic about a proposal to build a solar power system for the district's buildings but that it isn't a done deal.

The board heard a presentation at its regular meeting Monday from a representative of Shaker Heights-based Carbon Vision, a renewable energy analysis and project development firm. Ed Kieper, vice president of global operations development for the company, outlined a proposal under which the company would install solar arrays at schools at no cost to the district, in an arrangement that could save the district an estimated $20,000 savings in the first year.

"And actually it goes up from that," Kieper said, adding that while utility rates in the area are expected to increase significantly, the cost for the solar power will only increase 3 percent a year after the first year.

Power would be provided to the district at a reduced cost and the district could eventually purchase the system. Until then, Carbon Vision would own the system and provide maintenance on it.

Solar would not meet all of the district's energy needs, which Kieper said is intentional.

"You by no means want to become a producer of power," he said.

The matter may be discussed at a special board meeting scheduled for Tuesday but if it's not ready by then, another special meeting could be called later in the month.

"I'm not going to do it prematurely," Fleming said.

As commodity prices zigzag, business fortunes rise and fall

When Sonya Holmes returned to North Carolina to take over her father's chicken farming operation, little did she know that five years later her coops would sit empty and she'd be fretting about corn futures.

Instead of tending a flock of 90,000 chickens, Holmes today finds herself relentlessly researching a topic that most of her friends spend little time trying to understand: commodity prices.

"These commodity prices, it's affecting everyone," said Holmes, 48, as she sat in her Harnett County home beside a stack of news articles she'd printed out about commodity price volatility.

A commodity is any basic product - food, grains, metals - that is bought and sold, often through what are called futures contracts because the price is set in advance of delivery.

For Holmes and her fellow chicken farmers, the commodity wreaking havoc on their livelihood is corn, the main ingredient in chicken feed. Volatility in the price of commodities - particularly those that are key ingredients in the world's food supply - has the potential to destabilize a lot more than just the U.S. poultry industry.

Eventually, high commodity prices must be passed on to the consumer, which could put basic items such as chicken, coffee and clothing out of the reach of those already scraping by. All this has turned Holmes, who has a degree in criminal justice, into an unlikely crusader for finding ways to stabilize prices.

"I've been working on this for months," she said.

In some cases, such as coffee, that has translated into higher prices for consumers. In other cases, such as in the poultry industry, where processors have been unwilling or unable to raise prices to offset the increased costs, its simply led to companies going out of business.

Rising cost of coffee

For smaller North Carolina businesses that deal in these commodities, trying to manage the risk associated with the volatility has become central to their survival.

"It used to be when there was a temporary blip, you didn't have to go ahead and raise prices," said Robbie Roberts, owner of Joe Van Gogh Coffee, which has a roasting facility in Hillsborough and three retail stores.

Coffee prices surged to record levels earlier this year and remain historically high. Joe Van Gogh has raised coffee prices by about a dollar per pound to compensate, and the volatility means Roberts, who used to buy his coffee a year in advance, now is only able to lock in prices six months out.

"We assume that this is a forever thing," he said of the volatility.

Several factors are causing the price swings, said Tom Christiansen, owner of Foresight Brokerage, an agricultural risk management company in Irving, Texas, that advises farmers on when to sell their crops.

One is the growth of emerging markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and China. As the populations in those countries improve their standard of living, they consume more meat, coffee and other staples of a middle-class diet. That increases demand for the commodities required to produce those goods.

The other factor is speculative trading in the commodity futures markets by hedge funds and other investors.

Commodities are now a standard part of the portfolios of many hedge funds, which use them as a way to protect themselves against inflation. Commodity prices typically rise with inflation, whereas other assets, such as bonds, perform poorly.

Respess farms 2,100 acres, about 1,600 of which are dedicated to growing cotton this year. The rest are reserved for soybeans, corn or other crops.

The recent high prices for cotton, soybeans and corn means the last three years have been good ones for Respess, 63, even if he wasn't able to time things just right.

Cotton prices have been among the most volatile over the last 18 months, rising to nearly $2.30 per pound in March before falling by more than half to a $1.ceramic magic cube for the medical,10.

Respess sold his cotton last year for about 75 cents per pound, a price that he locked in nearly 18 months earlier. This year he had a contract to sell his cotton for as much as $1.28 a pound, but had to cancel it because dry weather and damage caused by Hurricane Irene reduced his yield.

Weather, not speculation, has been the chief factor in cotton's recent volatility, said Gary Bullen, an extension associate with N.C. State University's Agriculture & Resource Economics Department. A drought in west Texas and floods in Pakistan mean less cotton for sale globally, which causes prices to rise even if demand for cotton remains flat.

Bullen said the hardest thing for farmers these days is just deciding how much of their land they should dedicate to specific crops.

"It's the uncertainty in this market," he said. "The pricing will not stay up like this, but the question is when will they come down."

Holmes, the idled Harnett County chicken farmer, now spends her days talking to officials about commodity prices and keeping her fellow Townsends farmers updated on their prospects for finding another buyer for their chickens.

A Ukrainian billionaire bought Townsends North Carolina assets out of bankruptcy earlier this year. But he quickly scuttled plans to restart the operation, citing high corn prices as one of the reasons.

The decision meant more than 1,000 people lost jobs and hundreds of farmers lost contracts worth millions.

Holmes is now tracking ethanol legislation in Congress. The federal government subsidizes farmers to grow corn for ethanol, a policy that many say has been a major factor in high corn prices.

Holmes isn't advocating any one specific solution at this point. She just wishes more people would view this as a critical problem that needs to be solved soon.

"We have to do something with the commodities to make them more stable," she said. "I know people don't want regulation but we can't continue to allow these commodities to be so volatile."

New Westminster school board chair says all sprinkers were working in modulars

"There was not one day since the beginning of September that we had students in the modulars when the sprinklers weren't working," New Westminster school board chair Michael Ewen told The Record on Monday morning.

In a subsequent call to The Record on Monday afternoon, Ewen said building inspectors came to inspect the modulars in the district on Tuesday, Sept. 6, the opening day of classes, and confirmed that the fire alarm systems in the modulars were fully operational. After that inspection was completed, the district received temporary occupancy permits on Sept. 6.

Ewen said he is aware of one modular in Queensborough that did not have its sewage line connected up, but that meant students had to go inside the school to use the bathroom. Ewen said the sprinkler systems inside that modular were not affected.

In addition, Ewen said there were "technical issues" with the modulars, but it was all about "paperwork that wasn't filed."

"We would never put student safety in jeopardy," said Ewen. "We had always had our sign-offs in place."

Ewen was also told by district staff that the district did have a portable at Connaught Heights that did not have a sprinkler system. But, Ewen added, that's not unusual because portables, unlike modulars, do not traditionally have plumbing systems in place.

Outgoing school trustee Brent Atkinson told The Record on Monday morning that trustees were assured in mid-September by their head of facilities,The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations, Doug Templeton, that the modulars were in 100 per cent working condition.

Atkinson said that while plumbing was one of the last things installed in the new modular classrooms, he believes the modulars passed their final inspection.

Rainbow Acres strikes gold with dairy calf facility near Swanville
