At this point in the locavore narrative, urban chicken-keeping has vocal advocates and an adamant opposition. Some cities welcome backyard poultry with open arms, while others are more skeptical. As the practice grows, the two sides seem prepared for a long, drawn out war on the value and propriety of chicken-keeping within city limits.

Urban farmers generally view a backyard coop as a natural extension of their garden and a convenient, eco-friendly source of protein – though no academic study has examined the environmental impact of the practice. "When I'm busy, I never have down time to do art, but when it's slow, I'm panicked to find something to make money," he says.

Hargarten started pouring his custom molds on top of the washer and dryer in his Milwaukee home 22 years ago. He went on to make prototypes for Danbury Mint – the "wildlife with fur stuff" as he puts it – as well as garden and lawn sculpture for Today's Design House.

"Garden art is less popular now," says Hargarten, in whose workshop crafted woodland creatures can still be spotted if one looks hard enough among all the beer tappers.

The laundry machines no longer serve as a flat working surface for Hargarten, who's worked out of his backyard shop in Cedarburg the last 16 years. While the beer tapper handles and other custom designs are keeping Hargarten in his workshop most days, he did make time recently to participate as part of a team in a snow sculpture competition at Snow Days Chicago. Canadian Tire gets ball moving on expansion and relocation

Research placement investigates pig nutrition

A RECENT graduate of Harper Adams is investigating how much straw bedding pigs eat and how this affects their digestion, as part of a special research placement.which applies to the first offshore merchant account only,

Stephen Mansbridge is completing a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) research experience placement (REP) on the farm at the University College in Shropshire.

He is working with 45 sows and 96 growing pigs and collecting samples to see how much bedding the pigs are eating.

Steve from Burgess Hill, West Sussex, said: “Straw is known to speed up the transit of feed through the digestive system and in turn, reduces the amount of nutrients available to the pig.

“This means that in theory, you need to provide the pigs with more feed which is expensive and could be used elsewhere.

“This was devised due to our theory that pigs behave like small children, in that if they are given something new such as a toy or straw,ceramic magic cube for the medical, they will play with it and bite it.”

This experiment was then repeated with the growing pigs in a different building with each trial period lasting three weeks, with the first week for the animals to get used to their new feed.

To calculate the amount of straw eaten, faecal samples were collected and then analysed in the teaching laboratories on campus.
