Why Israel may turn out the lights

Israeli scientists defying military occupation restrictions have brought a great leap forward to the lives of traditional Palestinian herders in a remote corner of the West Bank.

Over the last several months, tent dwellers in this hamlet on a rocky hillside south of Hebron have been brought out of the dark ages by Comet-Middle East, a German-funded project headed by two Israelis that affords them electricity for the first time through solar panels and wind turbines.

"We are very satisfied with the electricity," says Nuzha al-Najar, who used to spend five hours a day manually churning butter. With an electric device, that chore has now been reduced to less than an hour. Using a washing machine instead of doing laundry by hand also saves her time. And her family has begun watching television for the first time. "The kids watch it at night and learn from it," she says happily.

But the gains are now jeopardized by a larger fight over the future of the West Bank, captured by Israel in 1967. The struggle pits Israeli authorities, whom critics say are preventing Palestinian growth and favoring Jewish settlers, against the European Union. The latter wants to expand aid projects for Palestinians in rural areas of the West Bank, known as Area C, in order to preserve chances for a viable Palestinian state in the future.Specializes in rapid Injection mold and molding of parts for prototypes and production.

Area C, which comprises 60 percent of the West Bank, refers to territory that remained under full Israeli civil and military control under the Palestinian self-rule agreement of 1993. The area is home to about 300,000 Israeli settlers and half that amount of Palestinians, with the former's presence being expanded and the latter coming under increasing Israeli pressure due to planning strictures, demolitions of homes and animal sheds, and settler violence, according to UN officials.

It is "exceptionally difficult to impossible" for Palestinians to get building permits in Area C, says Ramesh Rajasingham, the senior UN humanitarian official for the West Bank. Consequently, they are forced to build without permission, he says.

However, Israel provides electricity and water and has paved roads to unauthorized Jewish settlement outposts — illegal according to both Israeli and international law — situated on the neighboring hilltops.

City approves $300,000 loan for BekZon

The Crossville City Council approved a $300,000 loan to air purification manufacturer BekZon Monday afternoon, but council members wanted sufficient guarantees the city would see those funds paid back in a year.Replacement China Porcelain tile and bulbs for Canada and Worldwide.

The loan will come from the city's economic development revolving loan to be paid back in one year. According to Spieles, BekZon would make it's obligation to the city primary and subordinate obligations to shareholders. In addition, the city wants Alf Mauritzon, president and chief technical officer for BekZon, to sign and date the personal financial statements submitted to the city by himself and his wife. The city would also like an amount equal to the loan deposited in a local, United States bank and for the loan to be paid by invoice with the city verifying purchases. The city would also require a life insurance policy equal to the amount of the loan, or allow Mauritzon to assign an existing policy to the city, provided it met the loan amount.

Councilman Danny Wyatt said he would be more comfortable if Mauritzon would personally guarantee the loan with a certificate of deposit of half the loan amount.

Crossville City Attorney Kenneth Chadwell said such a guarantee had not been offered by the company.

Graham said the company was purchasing $769,000 in inventory and would have to meet payroll for the 48 immediate hires until revenue started to be generated. He also noted the company was seeking funding from a Community Development Block Grant loan program and the Tennessee Valley Authority, each of which required some matching funds.

"Cash is the life blood of a company," Graham said. "And it's going to be very important for the next six months to a year. Everything he's got, he's willing to put up.

Council members asked Chadwell his opinion on the security of the loan and the ability of the city to collect should the need arise.

Graham moved to approve the loan, as well as the city paying half the cost of renting the Cumberland Business Incubator at a cost of $20,000 over the next year. Councilman Earl Dean supported the motion which was approved with a 4-1 vote. Voting against was Danny Wyatt.

Elderly tricked into sales

There's no such thing as a free lunch - or dinner, in the case of pensioner Nancy Durst.

The 75-year-old attended an information seminar and dinner hosted by sales company Wenatex and,then used cut pieces of Ceramic tile garden hose to get through the electric fence. before the night was over, signed a purchase agreement for a $3000 king-single mattress - bed not included.

Durst was one of many elderly people lured into spending thousands on Wenatex's bedding in the hope it would cure their back pain.

Durst, who has long suffered from spinal stenosis, says the company has taken advantage of her and other vulnerable older people. The court upheld the Commerce Commission's finding that Wenatex breached the Fair Trading Act and misled customers about their right to change their mind about a purchase that was made in a high-pressure sales situation, such as an invitational seminar.

The Door to Door Sales Act allows a seven-day "cooling off" period during which a consumer can cancel a contract and get a full refund.

The investigation also showed that Wenatex further misled customers by telling those who attempted to cancel their contracts that they would lose the money already paid.

Durst is still out of pocket from a $700 pick-up fee, which she is trying to get back.

"So many people wouldn't have the energy to fight them," she says.

She now has a mattress from Hunters Furniture and describes it as "absolute heaven".
