Rivalry brews at Los Altos Morning Forum

An expert on beer and brewing made the case that beer is more versatile than wine in “Grape Versus Grain,” a Los Altos Morning Forum presentation Nov. 15.

Charles Bamforth, Ph.D., the first Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Brewing Science at UC Davis – the only public university in the U.S. that offers an accredited four-year program in brewing science – said beer goes better with more types of food, including pizza, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Thai, Mexican and South American. He also touted beer’s many health benefits: Consumed in moderation, beer cuts down the risk of arthrosclerosis, gallstones and kidney stones; boasts nutritive value; is the single-best source of silicon in the diet; and is a good source of soluble fiber.

Because beer is sensitive to light, motion and air, Bamforth said imported beer is usually not as good as local beer, adding that it’s best to drink it as close to the brewery as possible.

Bamforth said he prefers canned beer to bottled beer, because no light or air gets into the can. Beer on tap is the most unstable – if the pipes are not cleaned thoroughly, the flavor of the beer is ruined, he said.

According to Bamforth, China is the largest manufacturer of beer, and its Snow is the best-selling beer in the world.
