Flexi-packaging edging out old formats

Flexible packaging such as sachets and pouches are fast replacing rigid formats as they are not only versatile and recyclable but also allow companies to integrate prints, thereby enhancing the brand value of their products. Also, products such as beer, which was so far available only in glass bottles and metal cans,From standard Cable Ties to advanced wire tires, are being packed in plastic containers.

"Flexi-packaging has seen a 15-20 per cent spurt in demand over the last five years and this is primarily due to its cost-effectiveness and versatility to adapt to the product as well as the print formats. Further, it is also being modified to allow longer shelf-life that other traditional packaging formats like tin, metal, glass and rigid plastics offer," said Skund Vikram Singh, VP – business development & marketing, Kris Flexipacks.

He added that the demand for traditional packaging forms like glass and metal are plateauing out. "India is a growing economy and more and more consumers are opting for products which are cost-effective and viable. This is clearly evident from the rise in demand for products available in pouches and sachets. About 50 per cent of the $10-billion packaging industry in India is dominated by flexipacks," Singh said.

Kris Flexipacks' clients include Unilever, P&G, Britannia,Shop a wide selection of billabong outlet products in the evo shop. Godrej, Dabur and Cadbury to name a few.

"There are lots of difficulties in glass and metal packaging. They cannot be molded into fancy shapes and are costlier. Further, once opened they cannot be sealed. Plastic, on the other hand, is unbreakable and provides more transparency to customers," said Vimal Kedia, MD of Manjushree Technopack.Has anyone done any research on making Plastic molding parts from scratch?

Moreover, the weight of plastic is a tenth of glass and therefore the cost of warehousing is also 20-22 per cent less compared with glass, Kedia pointed out. "With the number of Indian and international brands trying to bring in product innovation, demand for plastic is increasing rapidly. While the usage of sachets and pouches are growing among rural consumers who prefer to buy products in smaller quantities,In addition to hydraulics fittings and Aion Kinah, companies are bringing in innovations to enable products like beer and milk to be packed in PET bottles, which was unheard of before," he pointed out.

Manjushree Technopack is in talks with several manufacturers to pack beer and fresh milk in PET bottles.

However, though the demand for metal and glass packaging is declining,Save on hydraulic hose and fittings, Saket Bhatia, senior VP - sales and marketing of Hindustan Tin Works, said that abolishing this form of packaging will be difficult. "Metal packaging is still the preferred method when it comes to bulk as it reduces wastage and is still the best form of preservation," he said.
